Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VI
NHC - NOAA ^ | 23 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2005 9:39:06 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Dangerous Hurricane Rita is expected to make landfall in the northeast Gulf of Mexico within 24 hours. Tornados have spawned in Louisiana. Water is filling the Ninth Ward of New Orleans again. A bus carrying elderly evacuees was gutted by fire this morning outside Dallas, with multiple fatalities. Television crews have positioned their hurricane reporters throughout the region to attain maximum drama effects. Whoooooa.

We're actually hoping here in Dallas that it will break the hot spell and give us some rain. 20 inches of rain would not be good, but we would all love, say, 6 inches spread out over 3 days.

You might get 6 inches spread out over three hours ... just for starters. As long as the center of circulation stays east of you, DFW should be spared the worst of the rains - but you still could get significant flooding, especially if it drifts in your direction.

Local Orlando news says Progress Energy asks all Florida residents to conserve energy. They have enough for a couple of days right now and no idea what to expect.

The Mayor of Houston just said.. unlike in Katrina, Texas will not blame FEMA on problems. The Feds are here as back up.

***

He also should have said that personal responsibility for oneself and one's family and friends is mandatory. Don't expect anyone (feds, state, local) to do it all for you.

So if someone tells ya to evacuate, you evacuate.

Ch 2 said 35 at Kemah. Reporter Courtney Zavala is in Galveston and was breathless when the wind started - they asked her how fast the windspeed was - it was 18mph! (Probably knots, lol. What's that? 21 mph?)

He's probably caught in traffic driving back to Dallas to see his family.
