Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VI
NHC - NOAA ^ | 23 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2005 9:39:06 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Dangerous Hurricane Rita is expected to make landfall in the northeast Gulf of Mexico within 24 hours. Tornados have spawned in Louisiana. Water is filling the Ninth Ward of New Orleans again. A bus carrying elderly evacuees was gutted by fire this morning outside Dallas, with multiple fatalities. Television crews have positioned their hurricane reporters throughout the region to attain maximum drama effects. Whoooooa.

Posted last night that shelter and food, etc. were available in Odessa, TX on I20. Just hear a rumor that there was no gas to be found east of Big Spring, TX all the way to Dallas. Any truth to this?

"La. is teetering on bankruptcy...this storm will send them over the edge."

Most states are enjoying an unexpected tax revenue windfall from the increase in gasoline prices.

5pm advisory out - 125 mph sustained winds, 930 mb.

Discussion indicates some strengthening might be going on from Dvorak numbers.

Can you imagine what Blanco and the other dems will want to do during the next major LA election. They are going to want everyone who as displaced to be able to vote absentee. Or maybe they will want polling places setup in TX at the Astrodome.

Ooops no...2100 Zulu is 1700 Eastern, so I don't know where they get the 6A and 6P from....it should be 5A and 5P....maybe there's someone from Atlantic Canada -- in that time zone it would be 6A and 6P.

The Mayor of Houston just said.. unlike in Katrina, Texas will not blame FEMA on problems. The Feds are here as back up.

Yee Haw! Take that Blanco, Nagin and your merrry band of pandering presstitutes!

This is close to pure guesswork, but in my observation a faster moving hurricane seems preferable because then it blows on through and goes somewhere else. The worry would be if it's intensifying, but not if it's just tracking faster.

Don't know of any state that has other than a fixed gas tax. Higher prices mean somewhat fewer gallons sold and less gas tax.

smart move by Perdue. he should encourage other businesses to allow workers who can, to telecommute. frankly, it should be a national effort - and postal service delivery should be reduced to 4 days per week also.
