This is probably happening all along I-10 and I-45.

Seems things just keep getting worse. Have they opened the roads going the opposite direction to evacuees? I know Florida usually does.

Oh boy....if there is any silver lining at all in this mess, it's to see just what needs to be done in our own states in the event of a castrophic event whether it's a storm, earthquake or a terrorist attack. Bottom line...we've got a lot of work to do....and a LOT of replanning to redo.......

I just heard that tanker trucks are going car to car giving every one 5 gallons of gas.

Why is traffic during a major evacuation news? Is it a surprise?

The media should focus on showing the best routes out of the city and making timely updates instead of showing clips of traffic jams that were taped 24 hours earlier.

This should NOT be allowed to happen. We had better have an independent investigation. When trash cans are full.... uhmm

Trash cans? Why are they whining about trash cans? Nagin killed 400 by leaving his buses to drown, and all the media can complain about in Texas is traffic jams and trash cans.

You know, if I were there, I would get a map out and use country roads to get where I want to go. May not be as fancy, but it beats sitting on the interstate. I do this kind of thing whenever I come upon gridlock, no matter what city I am driving through.

Well Columbus is about 90 miles West of Houston, at least these people got out of the way. Gas stations, grocery stores and all of the stores running out of supplies can't plan for this type of panic, they can't afford to keep extra stocks of supplies just sitting around for years on end or for the next "big emergency".

This has all been cause by the media and their quest for the "big story" and worst case scenarios. Yesterday I heard some reporter on Fox say that "in Galveston storm surges could be between 25 and 50 feet." 50 feet!?! That would be a freaking tidal wave. Galveston normally has waves that are about 2 to 3 feet.

Uh...maybe I'm completely stupid but why don't they evacuate the low lying areas first. They should have grid coming back from the water and evacuate one area at a time instead of everybody trying to get out at once. I can see why people just say to hell with it and stay.

Time for a Dunkirk? Maybe the authorities could ORGANIZE volunteers from outlying areas to stage in organized areas, then shuttle people from the interstate to these staging areas so fellow Americans can take them to designated areas?

At least get them off the interstate.

Every time I see something like this, I think the military types need to be in charge of these types of operations. They are expert at planning.

FEMA needs to be revamped to be a military-type organization with an other-than-warfighting mission.

Galveston native Paul Burka just now on FOX said that families apparently evacuated with as many personal belongings as possible, packed into all the family cars.

So if a family had 3 vehicles, they split up and took them all. Traffic planners didn't anticipate that. No one wanted to leave a car behind to the flood. So now they will park them on the shoulder or the median as they run out of gas and pack into one car, as they should have all along.

If any of them have gas and a map, they can take Rt 71 south for about 15 miles and then US Hwy 90 Alt, south and west from there.

The reason it is taking so long to close I-45 to one-way traffic is this: there are 1100 exits between Houston and Dallas.

I'm assuming the bus carrying the elderly people that caught fire and exploded did so because the driver had to ride his brakes for 500 miles.

I haven't heard what they are doing with the folks in the Astrodome.

The evacuation of Houston for this storm is beyond ridiculous. The news media fueled a panic that has caused most of this. Even in a direct hit, Houston is not built below sea level. The risk of massive flooding a la New Orleans is/was slim to none. Not to mention the fact that predicting the path of a hurricane is more of an art than a science. They are notorious for being unpredictable. The media was predicting catastrophe and it caused a panic.

Here in Dallas, people have also been panicking...IN DALLAS!!! Gas lines were huge yesterday, people buying CASES of water (as if Dallas would lose its water supply). Its stupid.

How far is that from the coast? When I saw the congestion yesterday I wondered why they didn't close the other side of the freeway off so people could drive on it. Why do people always wait until the last minute to leave?
