I'm not understanding this thread.

They ran out of gas and/or their cars broke down AFTER they had traveled away from Houston. Columbus is 60 miles from Houston and cars were sitting in traffic jams for nearly two days running (some didn't think to turn them off while waiting) and ran low on gas.

Are the back roads clogged also? There is no way I would sit on a freeway for hours. That's what median strips are for.

Not clogged, but gas stations in small towns are running out of gas. So, lots of cars on the side of the roads.

I thought that was why they made trash bags and hired attendants. So the bags would be changed when they fill up.

From Houston to San Antonio, Once you are west of Katy, almost all of I-10 is grass median. There of course are places you can't get across, but not many. The entire length is 2 lane service + median + 2driving and 1 shoulder + median + 2 driving + shouder + median + 2 service. In effect an 8 lane hwy + 2 shoulder lanes.

It's Bush's fault there are so many "Bush's fault" posts here and that you are so irritated by them too!

How far is that from the coast? When I saw the congestion yesterday I wondered why they didn't close the other side of the freeway off so people could drive on it. Why do people always wait until the last minute to leave?

Same story here in San Antonio, I made a trip to walmart for some gardening stuff. It was almost a madhouse.

I cringe at every one of the Bush fault posts.

The left is still pushing it though. Randi Rhodes on Air America is the worst offender. Literally everything is Bush's fault. No matter what event is in the news, she spins it to be Bush's fault. It's all she ever talks about. The other hosts on AAR sometimes talk of different things, but not her. She's Mrs Johnny-one-note.

Temps yesterday were in the high 90's - low 100's all along the routes. Overnight low temp is 80 degrees at the lowest. You can not sit in a crowded car or even an uncrowded one at midday without having the a/c running, and for that you need the engine on.

If your car is not in the best of shape this will cause overheating since the airflow for the radiator and engine cooling is provided by the movement of the car at hwy speeds.

Sort of a, d@mned if you do, d@mned if you don't, situation.

How long before we here about the fictitious rapes and baby killings on the side of the highway?

Not in Texas my friend.

Staying put may turn out to be a wiser move IF you live in a half way normal city that isn't already below sea level.

Example:
VERY heavy rains forecast at this time for Texas - Rita expected to stall.

If that happens, hope these grid locked people aren't sitting in low areas.

Don't mean to be second guessing. No matter what choice people make it will be VERY inconvenient - no place to stay, no power whether you go or stay etc.

Better yet, how about 1 day suspensions for "Bush's Fault" postings? That'll put and end to it real quick.

Great idea! I would like to see them put a message at the top of the page, in red, that let's people know they will be suspended for a day. That way, everyone will see it and no one can say they didn't know!
