About 45 miles. Katrina did serious damage to MS for at least 60 miles inland.

How far from the coast is Houston? It seems unusual that people are evacuating Houston.Houston is huge - spread out many many miles, and doesn't end till you get to Galveston. From City Hall it is 50 to 60 miles from the coast...

and when they talk about people evacuating houston, they are including all the little suburbs,,,you have several suburbs that were under mandatory evac,,,,for example, in La Porte, we are only 3-4 miles from the water/bay,,,,you have to evacuate those little places,,,,so it's not so much just people from the "city"

How far from the coast is Houston?Closer than New Orleans, farther than Tampa. About the same as Oakland or Jacksonville, perhaps.
