Extremely dangerous Category Four Hurricane Rita continues to move toward landfall along the northwest Gulf of Mexico shoreline. Mandatory and voluntary evacuations continue across Texas and Louisiana coastal areas. Lake Charles LA is providing evacuations by bus for residents who have no transportation.
Traffic gridlock in the greater Houston area was compounded by gasoline stations without fuel, long lines at those stations still carrying fuel, and record breaking temperatures on the first day of autumn.
Offshore drilling platforms and rigs, as well as oil refineries, petrochemical and natural gas plants are in the path of the storm. Wave heights recorded by buoy have exceeded 38 feet. The refineries threatened by Hurricane Rita are on higher ground than those affected by flooding from Katrina. As a result, speculation abounds regarding future prices for winter heating fuel and gasoline.

The stations I visited were pumping gas until their tanks were empty.
dead cat dump?
it's morning and checking the radar Rita has taken a jog westward. Being in west Houston I am not happy. Time to see if Home Depot got that plywood shipment in this morning.
People wait til the last minute because they don't want to deface their house and spend $200 on plywood unless they have to. To others: Don't preach to people unless you're in the strike zone! This is just terrible.
I still don't understand why anyone would short themselves on the Little Debbies.
Oh noooo..
It took my son 24 hours to drive a 3 hour drive from Houston. He has a fuel-efficient car, and a full tank before he left, but still almost ran out of gas just idling all that time. In a gas-guzzler, he would have run out on the road from Houston to San Antonio.
Hang in there. Please take some water with you for the line at Home Depot. Godspeed.
He's been telling about it....all the stories he heard.
rita evacuees bus explodes and is on fire.
Yikes.
Wow. Was there any place to refuel along the way?
That is very sad ..:(
The plants can wait on the rain.
You can send the beer, though.
Fox News now saying all major highways out of Houston are clear. And temp gasing stations are being set up.
Who is reporting this story?
12 old folks injured. (per Fox - prelim only)
I'm really glad to hear your son made to his destination and I know how relieved you are!! Just think - he will be able to tell his grandchildren that he was part of the largest mass evacuation that ever occurred in the US!!
I'm thinking of making up a couple of special T-shirts to that effect for my hubby and his aunt!!
AFter 5 hours sleep, Rita appears much closer to landfall. Did she pick up speed during the night? Also, what's with the bus in Ferris?
My breathe is taken away, jaw slack, just reading factual accounts of Hurr Isaac in the book.
I remember the early videos just after Katrina. Folks smiling (grim) and talking about the loved ones torn away from them. I pointed out to my kids these folks were in shock.
Fox & Friends just showed it.
Bus story is breaking. Update due out momentarily.
