I've used photobucket for a long time.
I'll go out on a limb here and say that they somehow get some advertizing dollars. If enough people use their site to post family pictures, family members will visit the site and see some ads.
Does it work? Do they make any significant money? I would think they wouldn't be in business if there weren't some money in it. People don't pay for bandwidth out of goodwill.
