A woman stands outside her car on Interstate 45 near downtown Houston on Thursday.
Storm evacuees stand on the side of Highway 290 which has become a parking lot as people attempt to flee Hurricane Rita.
Motorists wait in line for fuel at one of the few open gas stations in Pasadena, Texas, Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005. Residents were evacuating the area west of Houston due to a mandatory evacuation prior to Hurricane Rite arriving.

Oh, those poor people.
I just couldn't do it. I'm too old (and fat) to stand that kind of heat. :-)

IMO...just like did during the good old days during the last gasoline shortage...in order to alleviate the long lines at the pumps...the government issued orders designating "odd-even" license plates to fill-up on alternate days.
This same concept could have been instituted during the mandatory evacuation to lighten this terrifying gridlock.
Odd numbered license plates to be on the road exiting the area on Wednesday and Friday, etc..
If there are hundreds of cars trapped on the highway, there will be hell to pay by someone.

It's the areas east and south of downtown Houston that are under evacuation orders, and Pasadena fits that category.
Another call in to the local TV. Westbound I-10 freeway heading toward San Antonio. Caller made it from Mason Road to the Grand Parkway in two hours.
Distance 1 1/2 miles.
