Update: Category 5 Hurricane Rita - Live Thread, Part II
NHC - NOAA ^ | 21 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/21/2005 1:36:24 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Category 3 Hurricane Rita became the fifth major hurricane of the 2005 season during the night. Hurricane Rita threaded the needle through the Florida Straits and moved into the Gulf of Mexico. Storm damage in the Florida Keys and South Florida Peninsula was light, with scattered power outages, scattered tornados, and mild to moderate flooding.

Mandatory evacuations are in effect for Galveston County TX and New Orleans. Additional evacuation orders in the Greater Houston Metropolitan Area are anticipated throughout the day.

Crude oil prices reacted as oil producers shut down and evacuated workers from platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

No doubt they have everything ready go before the published time.

Maybe his shift ended at five? "I'm outta here!"

Well, the models are bunching up looks more like Rockport, Port Lavaca, Port O'Connor..

How heavily populated and what's their economy? Are there a lot of petorleum plants(ports) or is it more tourist or agriculture based?

We just have to wait to see who is right..There has been a shift down the coast but the thing is getting stronger and is so large..It's going to do some damage. Outer bands have a big reach it looks like.

Not even one letter was close. That must be a record for a misspelling.

Port O'Connor would be better for me personally than Freeport.

I saved that story to file. Wondering whether they will print a retraction to the error.

No kidding--to Rooters, "the National Hurricane Center said it probably would develop into a Category 4 on Wednesday" is good enough; it's been Wednesday for a while...

At least it was yanked from Breaking - agree it should be pulled altogether. Too much panic.

I was going to post something to that effect there, but you had already caught it. Every worthwhile post there over there ought to be here...
