Update: Category 5 Hurricane Rita - Live Thread, Part II
NHC - NOAA ^ | 21 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/21/2005 1:36:24 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Category 3 Hurricane Rita became the fifth major hurricane of the 2005 season during the night. Hurricane Rita threaded the needle through the Florida Straits and moved into the Gulf of Mexico. Storm damage in the Florida Keys and South Florida Peninsula was light, with scattered power outages, scattered tornados, and mild to moderate flooding.

Mandatory evacuations are in effect for Galveston County TX and New Orleans. Additional evacuation orders in the Greater Houston Metropolitan Area are anticipated throughout the day.

Crude oil prices reacted as oil producers shut down and evacuated workers from platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

IMO, this looks like a CC storm...the High over TX is not budging.

If you are in/near CC, I'd suggest going inland.

I work in a highrise in downtown Houston. The crackheads who run my company told us we won't shutdown until noon on Friday. I told them to remember what traffic will be like. Geez, anybody looking for a good IT guy out there?

It takes awhile for the gravity of the situation to sink in for some folks. Some are in denial, others are just stubborn. You have done what you can do by offering your home and reiterating the dangerous conditions.

You must mean "Babboon Blanco".

I don't mean to dispute your tagging her this. But, is it really fair? Aren't Baboons rather intelligent?

Governor says "devastating" from Beaumont to Corpus. It is life threatening to stay.

I was planning on checking out very early Friday morning. Now I am thinking Friday might be too late because of many cars stranded along side the road. I may go tomorrow.

I'm not too concerned about the sustained winds or rain, and I am too far north for the surge, but the tornados, and stories from neighbors who were here for the last two have made me nervous.

Recon found winds that correlate to 164mph at the surface. I'm not sure why they haven't bumped it up yet.

Dunno. The next scheduled advisory isn't until 4 pm (after all, this thing is headed away from the closest pieces of land), but I'd expect an intermediary advisory in about 40 minutes.

it's in the warm loop current right now, I have heard, but the surface water from here on out is all pretty warm...but it's greatest growth will probably be while it's right where it is now...

Rockport orders evacuation

Rockport city officials have issued a mandatory evacuation effective 3 p.m. today. City Hall will close and city services will cease Thursday, Mayor Todd Pearson said. "We want residents to leave as soon as they possibly can," he said. "We want to discourage anyone staying behind since we won't have police to force them out." The city has made arrangements with the Council for the Aging to identify people without transportation. Those without transportation will be bused to Live Oak Elementary after 6 p.m. today.

Rockport is a town just up the coastline from Corpus Christi.

She is buying supplies and they are staying. She says she has never left,

What is it with these people?

I don't know your friend's specific situation but I really wonder about people who are told to evacuate and who refuse.
