September 20, 2005 Pentagon Blocks Testimony at Senate Hearing on Terrorist By PHILIP SHENON WASHINGTON, Sept. 20 - The Pentagon said today that it had blocked a group of military officers and intelligence analysts from testifying at an open Congressional hearing about a highly classified military intelligence program that, the officers have said, identified a ringleader of the Sept. 11 attacks as a potential terrorist more than a year before the attacks.
The announcement came a day before the officers and intelligence analysts had been scheduled to testify about the program, known as Able Danger, at a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Bryan Whitman, a Defense Department spokesman, said in a statement that open testimony about the program "would not be appropriate - we have expressed our security concerns and believe it is simply not possible to discuss Able Danger in any great detail in an open public forum." He offered no other detail on the Pentagon's reasoning in blocking the testimony.
Senator Arlen Specter, the Pennsylvania Republican who is chairman of the committee, said he was surprised by the Pentagon's decision because "so much of this has already been in the public domain, and I think that the American people need to know what happened here."

What an abuse of power, I didn't know Bush heard this case and determined the sentence. You would think the media would be all over that.
How does naming specific people in Gov who were responsible for passing this info along and did not do so interfere with national security? It does not.
Do you watch many Congressional hearings? Surely you don't think they are about to politely ask for a specific answer and then dismiss the witness. There will be all kinds of background questions on the creation, methods, scope of operations, etc. I am not interested in the Jersey girl melodrama about 3,000 dead...there is a good chance there is a lot of information that could hurt our security at risk here.
It's high time the committee subpoenaed all involved in the Able Danger coverup, and exposed this monster.

keep in mind the date of inception 1998....the date of purge...2000..
Has anyone even considered that able danger may have in fact been "unsanctioned" by the adminstration?
What if this was an attempt by those who saw what was happening and tried to get around the golelick wall by data mining public info?

It would have been great to have public hearings on AD. But if the stakes involved are our national security and intelligence collecting ability, then I'm not so keen on the hearings.
The question boils down to which is more important: finding the toons and their slumlord buddies guilty of treason or ensuring informational and intelligence superiority in the WoT and any other potential conflict with rouge states.

Ahem. On the surface, AD looks benign. But it could incorporate some advance and classified technology and "unconventional" methods. (Some that if revealed, would probably get a lot of FReepers to jump with glee.)
Of course the Pentagon backtracked, saying AD didn't exist then saying, "ok it does but these guys can't talk about it". The Pentagon and our military are composed of some of the most highly skilled liars in America. They do nothing but create cover stories and hide secrets. I mean, who heard of Delta Force before the Desert One fiasco. Ask a millitary officer what is Task Force 121 prior to Saddam's capture and he'll reply, "121? What's that? Sounds like something Hollywood made up."
And I when the safety and security of Americans is at stake, I wouldn't have it any other way.
I'd love to see the toons fry for their complicity in allowing this atrocity to occur on our land but I'm not sure if I'm willing to compromise America's espionage capabilities for this.

Your #2 is what I heard is blocking the testimony in a public hearing. They were using a system that they don't want revealed in a public hearing. Note that it says public hearing. If I was in the shoes of Rumsfeld, I wouldn't want it in public either.
This is about Intelligence gathering and the methods should not be made public IMHO. Then I used to worked for DoD and still believe in "need to know" and don't believe I have a "need to know" the details of how this went down.
You never know what question might be asked in a public hearing by some of the bozos we have in Congress. Call me old school, but I don't believe Intelligence operations should be broadcast for everyone to know. But then I don't trust Congress not to leak if they held closed door hearings.
