New Orleans Suspends Reopening of City (As Rita Approaches Gulf)
Associated Press ^ | September 19, 2005 | MICHAEL RUBINKAM

Posted on 09/19/2005 2:05:43 PM PDT by RWR8189

Under pressure from President Bush and other top federal officials, the mayor Monday suspended the reopening of large portions of the city over the next few days because of the threat of a new round of flooding from a tropical storm.

"I would rather err on the side of conservatism so we would make sure we have everyone out," Mayor Ray Nagin said.

Of course such hurricanes can arise from a precise timing of a flush of a toilet/urinal at the UN HQ in NYC. A flush last thursday is likely responsible for this particular one. I'll bet this one is Bush's fault, and Condi is an accomplice.

I wonder if he has gotten the buses out of the flooded parking lots, yet?

No need for the actual warm (or cold) body to be present for the vote. Besides, the RATS don't have as many buses as they used to.

I like the bit "so we would make sure we have everyone out". Does that mean they finally have the buses dried out and have checked all the nursing homes?

Did you hear Nagin's quote yesterday wrt his disagreement with Rear Admiral Thad Allen over whether or not to let the people back in?

Dripping with sarcasm, he said something like: "Since I been gone a couple days, i guess he (Thad Allen) was made the new mayor of New Orleans."

What a jerk. Sounded very power trippy to me. First they cry "where are the feds?", then when the Feds come they say stupid things like this.

On MSNBC they are reporting there are lines and lines of people trying to get back in to NO right now.

I wonder if the people that already evacuated, if another hurricane hits there in NO, do they get paid twice as much by FEMA?

Wow, this must be the first time the Mayor had a lack of judgement.

Well, there's a rumor afoot that as many as one-third of those in line are Democratic volunteers & hirelings who've been sold on the notion that not only is NOLA the stage to be to make their national debut, but that the next hurricane will offer the best political theater ever waged & staged!

All these folks need to do is wait out the next storm; cry on camera Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday-Friday when the government fails to be their savior; savagely rip the feds for stupidly leaving the city instead of remaining in harm's way to save them; and then, as an added bonus, the feds can give them a $2,000 debit card and they could claim NO residence and housed for free.

Why, the Democrats couldn't have paid for as much political capital as what's been handed to them, w/the MSM realizing what a field day this is to be the directors and producers of these impromptu political plays.

I think some of MSM segments are deserving of Hollywood trophyism status.

What a difference from yesterday for the incompetent, trashtalking, arrogant buffoon.

Mayor defends reopening city

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Mayor Ray Nagin asks if the Coast Guard official in charge of the federal hurricane recovery effort is now "the new crowned federal mayor of New Orleans."

Nagin is responding to Thad Allen's repeated public comments questioning if the city is ready for people to return. Residents started trickling back in this morning under Nagin's phased return.

Allen has been warning about the lack of safe drinking water, shaky city services and threat of another storm.

Nagin tells Fox News that residents "deserve the opportunity to see what they have left and what they can salvage." He says if Allen is suggesting he's "pushing a little hard," the admiral is right.

An Army Corps of Engineers commander in charge of draining the city says depending on Tropical Storm Rita's path and strength, people may have to evacuate again."

I heard that the full story is, they're suspending reopening the city until they find someone qualified to act as mayor....

Maybe if NOLA took another hit the FEDS would have second thoughts about rebuilding

Mayor Fagin is so out of his league!

Pathetic. He is using the hurricane as cover for his reversal.

From the start FEMA and the federal authorities wanted to wait until the hurricane season was over and the city was dewatered before allowing people in.

No reliable phone service.

No potable water

No hospital facilities.....

The man is once again the problem rather than part of the solution.

Yep. He is in way over his head (pun not intended, but appropriate). The sheer incompetence of the man is embarrassing to watch. Listened to him today and it sounds like he's back on the drugs (i.e. got a fix for his jones).

Blank-O continues in hiding!

Guess she figures it best to rest on her laurels. She didn't do too bad in the two speeches she made before Congress, or the LA legislature, or somewhere last week.

But orders from the DNC were to get all those voters back in town before they get settled elsewhere.

Exactly. It won't be long before we'll hear that all the hospitality shown by the Red States to the evacuees was part of a VRWC to disperse the Democrat hold on parts of LA.
