Let's Welcome Latinos to Pittsburgh (Ivory Tower boosters inadvertently paint racial stereotype)
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | September 18, 2005 | Richard Delgado and Jean Stefanic

Posted on 09/19/2005 10:37:23 AM PDT by John Robertson

Pittsburgh needs more Latinos. Pious, industrious, roll-up your-sleeve immigrants from Mexico and Central America, raring to work at jobs like construction, food processing, restaurants and old age homes, save their money, send their kids to school, move up the ladder and relive the American dream.

...Wouldn't Latinos just be a drain on public services? Like most immigrant groups, they could use a helping hand in getting their first apartment and job. But Latinos on the whole consume fewer social services than others, and contribute to the economy through their taxes.

...What about crime? As with any group, an increase in membership could cause the absolute number of crimes to go up. But the crime rate is apt to go down.

...Latinos, with their strong work ethic and traditional respect for elders, are the logical choice, both nationally and here.

Here's who wrote this insulting, intellectually naive piece (yet simultaneously intellectually deceptive, as it doesn't even begin to address illegal immigration): "

Richard Delgado is university distinguished professor of law and Derrick Bell fellow and Jean Stefancic is research professor of law and Derrick Bell scholar at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where they teach courses on race and civil rights."

In addition to being an incredibly ignorant essay, there is an odious subtext here: Latinos are a "better behaved, more productive" minority than are African-Americans. I would like to get this piece forwarded to BOTH Latino (or Hispanic or whatever, let's not get into that argument, okay) and African-American civil rights groups. I am convinced that both groups will take great offense. I am further convinced that the good professors need a wakeup call. Thanks.

As limousine liberals always forget to say..."as long as they don't move into my neighborhoods or send their kids to my kids school..."

Perhaps they would like some of the ones in Herndon, VA. The city wants to build a day labor office where both legals and illegals can find work. Northern VA is a construction mecca where countless builders hire:

Immigrants go where the jobs are. Pittsburgh has few illegal immigrants because there're so few jobs here.

"About 15 percent of the U.S. prison population is currently Latino, while their share of the population at large is 14 percent..." Everyone knows this is B.S.. Check out this website of the San Diego county sheriff describing the ten most wanted criminals:

I just realized that the second link in #6 requires a password to access but there are many other websites outlining this problem, which is happening in many other cities, as well. Several articles have mentioned the violence that has occurred.

Legal immigration yes. Illegal immigration no.

Pittsburgh is closing cherished neighborhood schools for lack of children. Latino families have lots of children. Pittsburgh boasts a fine stock of older houses, many needing remodeling. Latinos love working in the construction industry. Pittsburgh's acres of parks and gardens need tending. Latinos enjoy and understand caring for plants.

This is pretty much racist, isn't it? "Oh, those Latinos, they love to have huge families and work in our gardens."

Why not mention their lowrider cars, combined with our road system will provide plenty of work for body shops?

Oh, it's as racist as can be. I have private-emailed my official response to the paper. Thanks.
