Woman in power is powerless when it comes to meeting men
http://www.mcall.com/ ^ | September 17, 2005 | Amy Alkon

Dear Amy: I'd like to be in a relationship again, but I never even get asked out (unless you count frisky 85-year-olds and drunks at the corner bar). I'm a 32-year-old woman who's happy, sociable, and attractive. (I paid for college by modeling and continue to take care of myself.) I'm second-in-command at a big company, financially secure, and own a beautiful home. How can I meet men in general, and more specifically, men I'd actually want to date?

Deluxe Chopped Liver

Dear Deluxe: To scare away vampires, it takes garlic and crosses, which make ugly bulges in sleek, satin evening bags. Luckily, all you have to do to scare away men is pull out a business card that says ''senior vice president.''

''Power is the ultimate aphrodisiac,'' said Henry Kissinger. Sure it is — unless you're a woman. Research by Stephanie L. Brown and Brian P. Lewis, published in Evolution and Human Behavior (Nov. '04), seems to confirm what many lonely women at the top already know: When guys go for the woman in the boardroom, it isn't the woman running the meeting but the secretary who wheeled in the coffee and croissants before it started.

Sure, plenty of men will scamper up the corporate ladder for a one-night stand. But, according to Brown and Lewis' study, men looking for dates or relationships tend to prefer their subordinates to their colleagues or bosses. The researchers hypothesize that men evolved to want women they can control as a means of guarding against ''parental uncertainty'' — unwittingly raising kids fathered by the Neanderthal next door as their own. Brown and Lewis think this may also explain why men are suckers for ''behavioral expressions of vulnerability'' — women who act like they might not be able to make it across the street

"And Princess Diana is dead.....so are both sexes looking for perfection nowadays?"

No.

Women are looking for Prince Charming...

Men are looking to get laid.

"I am a male who has dated, College PH d's, Attorneys, and commodities brokers. These women were very attractive, fun to be with, bright, and great conversationalists, but marry one!!!!!! have one bare my children!!????!!!!, OH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHA."

Just got done discussing this thread with my brother, and we've both dated the same sort. We came to the same conclusion, "you'd have to be terminally insane, might as well put a bullet in your head."

Unfortunately, with the prevalence of modern-day FemiNazis on all the campuses these days and the standard sitcom male-as-incompetent-loser characterization of us, ALL females view themselves as Sleeping Beauty, and refuse to contemplate a relationship with a male that is any iota less than her previously-fixated standards has mandated. I have bitten My tongue more times than I care to mention when I have overheard a female complaining to another about how some male did not meet her standards in one way or another, never realizing that I was so grinding My teeth not to say "Hey, YOU are no Vision Of Perfection yourself, you tent-wearing beachball!"

Good to see you on here again, mate.

I've been on relatively regularly lately. Of course, if you are confusing my tag with the other "ronin" (he's the one that lives in Japan; the mix-up happens all the time. I'd get a new tag, but it's hard to drop one that I've had since '98), I've only seen him a couple of times in the past few months. It's kind of sad how few of us old-timers there are left.

Well, maybe there are more than a few (now that I think about it). But F.R. has gotten so big that, aside from occassionally bumping into people on "topic" threads (crevo threads, Elian-Schaivo-Natalie threads, etc.), you can read a dozen threads and hardly see the same names.

Sorry I just don't believe that...I think there still are some real men out there who play by their own rules as opposed to the so-called "modern world"

Yes, and we are branded as (Chauvanist) "Sexist Pigs" for our efforts.

If I am, then apologies indeed for the mix-up. I am an 'oldtimer' as well and I must admit albeit however reluctantly that sometimes the memory is just not what it used to be. You know what they say;
"The memory is the second thing to go..."

You recall incorrectly. I simply ask people what car they drive because I like cars and it is a topic of interest to me. I gave up dating guys for their cars when I was still a teenager. I certainly didn't marry my husband for his beat-up Ford Ranger! You're the one using your vehicle as a "dating litmus test".
The next time you write someone off for asking about your car, you may consider they had a perfectly "benign" motivation for doing so. You're the one pre-judging what their motivations are.

BTW, whether you want to admit it or not, outward appearances DO matter and every single person who has ever taken a breath has made some sort of conclusion about another person based on their appearance. It goes without saying that what is inside matters the most, as outward beauty is transient, but that does not mean appearance is not considered. It's part of the natural order. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Quite a few do. However, in My opinion that is a totally illogical positon to take. In todays society, we spend the vast majority of our time at work and therefore the overwhelming amount of our social interaction will occur there. Think about it; are you most likely to mention to others that you met your Significant Other at work -or at some bar when you were attempting to drown away the stresses of work... ?

Perhaps it is up to men to do something to protect and promote the choice of those women.

Akin to protecting a womans virtue in days of old.

Yeah, I saw that from your tagline (the date he joined pops up if you mouse-over a person's name and stay there for a second). I know how you feel, though. It's always good to see people who've been absent for a while drift back in (well, except Eschoir... and BatJack... and ... well you get the picture *grin*).

Victoria, your post 685 has some outstanding commentary and valid verses. Profoundly written by the author, thanks for the post.

One thing where I must differ vs. your interpretation (and this is probably just semantics) is that the man is indeed required by God to BE in charge to provide for and protect the woman.

The two are indeed equal but with different responsibilities, the man to lead gently (take charge) while the woman is to submit as unto Christ. And yet, the man and woman are to prefer one another, all believers are to treat others as better than themselves, honoring one another.

When you consider that once adopted into God's family by faith we are co-heirs with Christ, that doesn't mean we are earthworms, we are the apple of God's eye--and yet we can all exhibit meekness and humility.

"Whatsoever ye do unto the least of these, ye do it unto Me"

Amen.

Probably a throwback to their college days that he would "have sex with her" though he wouldn't marry a woman who had sex with him before marriage...

Not a totally far fetched thing for young people in the last few generations...

As a personal aside, I am happy to have encountered a female car enthusiast here as the vast majority of those I have met in the past were outrageously clueless as to what I was talking about when I discussed them. Thank you.

Being from Silicon Valley, there are unfortunately no written rules to follow when the Dating Game is being played, and far too many Goldbricking (Mercenary) individuals are out there for comfort. I have been on the receiving end of far too many encounters to accept 'innocent exclamations' any more, as My experiences to date have only solidified My understandings as more and more encounters have passed.

I am perfectly willing to accept that occasionally someone might be enquireing as to what manner of automobile I operated as simply a benign question intended to keep the conversation flowing -if you are willing to admit that this in fact is used by a certain percentage of the population in order to assess the financial resources of the enquiree. Something which My career in Silicon Valley quite effectively sensitised Me to. Lol. Not all bad, though. Nowadays I can sum up within seconds if a female is genuinely interested or not. Not a bad skill to posess.

On another topic: I never stated that outward appearances were irrelevant, as I know perfectly well that there has to be SOME level of attraction there for the relationship to bloom. I merely pointed out that too often what is on the outside appears to take precedence over what is on the inside, and decried the position of society today upon the matter. Having dealt with far more members of the opposite sex than I am happy with turning out to be more interested in a man's finances than in a relationship overall, I merely related My experiences in the matter. And, please see My previous reference to Mary Steenbergen above.

I guess the question is, why would any man who is looking for anything serious consider a woman more committed to a career than to raising children?

Now THAT is the best summation I have read thus far!

I don't think he meant any harm by it... My wife is a blonde and very smart. Probably smarter than her husband (brown haired)... yeah I don't doubt it, b/c redheads have quite firey personalities.... :)

I seriously doubt any company can prohibit fraternization to that level, and get away with it. It is perfectly reasonable to prohibit relations between the grunt workers and executive managment, but not on the same job level.

what company is this? So i can avoid it like the plague...

How is the traditional and biological reality of a man pursuing a woman a headgame?

It became such when women began labeling it as "Sexual Harassment" and "Stalking". Now a man just does not know which way to turn.

Incidentally, My girlfriend at the time clued Me in at how to distinguish genuine interest for the more darkly-shrouded intents. She informed Me: "It's 'Sexual Harassment' if the girl DOESN'T like you." Unfortunately, we males are never sure of either of those positions, to our great discomfort -and the ruination of many a man's good name...
