As he prepares to launch his reelection bid, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is facing attack from a group of fellow Republicans who condemn his record on Latino appointments and assail the state GOP as "morally wrong and politically stupid" in its treatment of Latino candidates.
In an unusual open letter drafted for release today, the activists offer a litany of political grievances and assert that "the California Republican Party and its key leaders are systematically excluding Latinos from any kind of meaningful role in the state party or state government."
The letter noted that Schwarzenegger has no Latinos in his cabinet or in senior positions. It said that the governor and prominent state GOP leaders have endorsed non-Latino candidates over "qualified, credible and competitive" Latinos in statewide races in recent years, contrasting that approach with President Bush's aggressive courtship of Latino voters. It also said that just one of Schwarzenegger's first 56 judicial appointments was Latino a claim that could not be independently verified because there is no precise record.
"The California Republican Party's exclusion of Latinos is morally wrong and politically stupid," the letter states, urging "dramatic action to change course before it's too late for our party and our state."
Margita Thompson, a spokeswoman for the governor, said Schwarzenegger had a strong record of appointing Latinos and had enacted legislation to benefit farmworkers, small-business owners and schools in disadvantaged communities, all of which have lifted California's Latino community.
More broadly, she said, "The state was on the verge of bankruptcy and what the governor has done in terms of improving the jobs climate and bringing California back from the brink of bankruptcy has helped all Californians."

Glad to be a member of the party that doesn't check your race at the door.
I ain't hearin' no complaints out here. Everyone seems to like the man. Hearing more "I'm sick and tired of teachers' unions". Just an observation....
LOL.. It's raining vitriol and foam at the LA
Times, as usual.
There are Pro's and Con's to the reforms sought, but in the end, do we want to let things remain the same?
If the measures are enacted, things could get better .. or worse.
Obviously the current rate of spending increases can not continue without dire effects to the state's economy.
If things go badly, we can always undo the measure or ask a 'feeeeling' Judge to toss it out. ;-)

I been on a ship for 1 days and only had CNN to get news from.. now I need another vacation :)
Poor thing. Might of thrown myself overboard. Hear about the big surf coming in Saturday? 8-10 foot swells.
Earth to Stupid Party - they don't vote.
That and sick and tired of illegal aliens, and those that pander to them.
Yep. That too.
That distinction does not hold for Dems, & they are constantly proving their anti-American sentiment.
That was called Prop.187(that voters passed 60-40???)
The way that idiot tried to "weaken the foundations" of this country, I don't think I would trust the structural integrity of one of his Habitat houses, even if I was a hamster.
Suggest you review the decision and the non partisan, legal reviews of the decision at that time. Pfaelzer's decision was defensible enough to be considered a rebuttable presumption considering the precedent she had to work with. The issue was red meat for the SCOTUS who should have been called upon to provide clarification in the matter.
The individual who clearly took the lower road during that contentious process was Gray Davis. In April of 1998 Davis abandoned the state's ongoing appellate process and consented to binding arbitration in the 9th Circuit, implying authority he did not have. His naked pandering not only sold out a super majority of his constituents, but also dealt state's rights a deadly blow. The California Republican Party, equally self serving, did not mount a legal challenge to Davis' unsupported actions fearing erosion of their popularity among the Hispanic electorate because of the race bating the Democrats had injected into the matter.
While Davis's, crass, unilateral decision exhibited the most glaring lack of integrity in this sad affair, the CAGOP's posture was an embarrassment in comparison to Pfaelzer's decision. Many legal scholars agreed that substantial portions of California's appeal were a slam dunk.
Appreciate the feedback. I often wondered why those who were responsible for putting Prop. 187 on the ballot would go through the time and expense knowing it would be shot down by the courts. For that matter, why are these types of proposals not studied for there legality(by legal authorities)BEFORE they are even allowed to be put on a ballot. Seems like a waste of time, effort and money not only for the sponsors of said proposals.... but also the voters.
What are they whining about? The Legislature in Sacramento is full of them, which is a very big part of our present problems in this state.
Republicans attacking their own (Arnold). Strange bedfellow of yours?
No doubt they are upset about his veto of gay marriage.
The California Republican party keeps losing because it is run by a group of elitist RINOs.
Can anyone get a copy of the letter and the names of the signers? I don't recognize the name of the one person the LAT mentioned, Uvaldo Martinez.
