I am not buying. How would the city know the names of the people that stayed behind and the ones who left.

From friends, relatives and neighbors, public records and folks unaccounted for. They'll canvass the survivors. Same as any other instance of mass casualties. It'll take some weeks to sort things out.

In the WTC a reasonable estimate based on the occupancy of each client that occupied the offices in the towers could be made.

Yup. And that "reasonable estimate," in the first hours and days, was ten times the actual death toll, because most people in the towers got away without pausing to sign out.

You will never convince me

I don't doubt that.

How many would have died in New Orleans during a normal 2-week time frame? I know that about ten, on average, would have been murdered.

The levees broke between 0830 and noon, Monday, the day Katrina made landfall.

See this thread, post 40:

Yeah, the same UK 'papers' that tell us of crop circles, alien abductions, alien conceptions, human vampires, dinosaur sightings, world record length beards and toenails, the discovery of Atlantis etc.

Excellent point!
With a murder rate of 265 annual it certainly works out
to 5.0962 a week.
Now how about other causes of death.

Annual N.O SIDS 90 = 3.4
Abortion ?
Traffic deaths ?
Accidents (industrial, etc.)? Diseases ?
Natural causes (such as old age)?
With some investigation I am willing to
bet that 30-32% of these numbers could have died of other causes.

It truly Is a miracle that so few died in this tragedy.

"From friends, relatives and neighbors, public records and folks unaccounted for. They'll canvass the survivors."

Yeah Right!

You mean the public records that are under water?
I don't think they (City, state officials)were doing any
canvassing of the survivors.

I think they were still looking for the keys to the buses.

It is 279 too many, but yes, in light of the numbers Rayn-Agin had screamed about, it is good news.

As of said on another thread, Rayn-Agin should get the Yasser Arafat Jenin Massacre award for Incendiary Hyperbole. He may get to retire the trophy.

Nagin said a city plan, not contracts, were his ultimate focus.

"What I care about is the plan. I don’t want anybody outside of New Orleans planning nothing as it relates to how we’re going to rebuild this city without us signing off on it," Nagin said.

Oh well, we know about Nagin and plans.

Police Chief Eddie Compass declined to answer any questions, including whether officers received any calls for help from those inside the hospital after it was evacuated.

I have a feeling he wouldn't have a clue. He was somewhere hiding with soiled panties throughout.

I remember, a couple of years ago when the french lost about 2000 elderly in the month of August. Families had just left them to go on their vacations and it was a particularly hot month that year. How can the MSM go ballistic on the 'gov't', with so few casualties when you compare the callous attitude of the french culture...and their deaths from sheer cavalier neglect...???

You may be correct!

One of the reporterettes for FOX stated "The death toll has jumped to 279.

This is such blatant sensationalism.

The levee was breached Monday, the MSM missed it but the locals did not.

Nagin did not have the power to ask for help from Bush. ONly Blanco did. Nagin was screamig for help.

Blanco is the responsible one in this mess. And I will bet a thousand bucks she had something to do with those buses not being taken out, or Landrieu's Aunt Phyllis did. Or Lt Gov Landrieu who is in charge of emergency preparedness in the state.

And not all of the 279 came from NO. It is the death toll for the entire state of LA.
