The state Department of Health and Hospitals said today Louisiana's death toll from Hurricane Katrina now stands at 279. That figure, which comes from statistics reported by local coroners to state officials, includes 242 bodies at the metrowide morgue at St. Gabriel, three bodies in St. Charles Parish, 25 bodies in Jefferson Parish, six bodies in St. Tammany Parish and three bodies in New Iberia Parish.

there was plenty of time....people were lining up all day Sunday to get into the Superdome....
the storm didn't hit until nearly the next morning and even then, the real flood waters came later....
I understood that someone got the people out of the Marriot ..
why no one for these poor people.....
again, striking differances in the NO police and the nurses hand bagging patients in a hot, humid, dark hell-hole.....

do you know what you are saying?.....if my mother was in that hospital, dying anyway, if the docs left ther to drown or be atacked by savages, I damn well would choose morphine for her....
trouble with our society is people are terribly, terribly soft....
we are becoming so fuzzy headed we can't seem to accept the hard realities in life.....
you ever been in severe pain?......would you want to be left on a gurney in the dark damp hell to die a miserable death?....flies, insects of every description all over you, no good air to breathe, the stench of backed up toliets in your nostrils?..the sounds of gangsters just outside waiting to pounce, let alone the rising tide of fetid flood waters?
After the storm passed, nagin and Blanco thought they had dodged a bullet, they were almost ready to start kicking people out of the Superdome and send them home. They told Bush, that the didn't need help.
But then the levee broke just after midnight Tuesday, by morning the water was at rooftops in some places.
Blanco and nagin should have had everyone our BEFORE the storm hit, and it's nobodys fault but theirs. They had days to do it, FEMA was already staged outside the city, Blanco never activated the NG which could have evacuated everyone using those buses. Especially those in nursing homes and hospitals. All those deaths, and that where the body count is from, is THEIR FAULT, and theirs alone.
Just depends on who is doing the math.
Won't even bother asking about the politics of the Chicago city gov't at that time, or the lack of mention in the LSM of this episode, THE greatest politically-caused natural disaster, in terms of deaths, in at least the past 40 years.
The embrace of socialism is essentially a death wish, and socialist governments are hardly to be differentiated, over time, from en passant executioners.
And in many cases historically, one can drop the en passant entirely.
Several days ago some leftist idiot claimed that in NO they were eating corpses, and it was quoted right here, on FR. This explains the low number of bodies, for the rest must have been devoured.
Or they turned to zombies and are roaming the streets looking for the living.
Absentee voters?
It was the authorities, not the media, who shipped in 25K body bags. Of course, the number of body bags isn't a reliable forecast of the number of dead; better to ask for too many than too few, because the unused ones can always be shipped back to the warehouse.
The high-end estimate of the dead, from what I've seen, was Nagin's 10,000. It reminds me of the immediate aftermath of 9/11, when we were preparing for tens of thousands of victims before settiling on a (still-staggering) number just south of 3000 weeks later. In crisis mode, it takes a while to sort out that Jimmy Smith, Jimbo Smith and James Lee Smith are all the same person, not three people.
All that said, if the final toll doesn't reach four figures, that qualifies as a minor miracle. If half a million people flee chaos and fewer than a thousand die in it, while I don't want to diminish the tragedy of those hundreds of families, that's a pretty solid record.
I think you are right. It seems like over reporting, much looting by people who were more than willing to stay behind and load their vehicles up with loot. Plenty of time to get people out by buses, ambulances and anything else. Time to get LA officals out of that state before any more harm is done.
and still no reports of zombies!
Sarcasm duly noted, but for values of "they" that aren't limited to humans, there's a point there. Gators and numerous smaller-scale scavengers are at work in those waters. After two weeks, it's a safe conclusion that some remains will never be recovered. Thankfully, that number appears to be lower than feared a few days ago.
The problem with the UK story is that doctors don't give morphine shots...
You have to get it out of the locked cabinet, sign it off, and the nurses have a key...in addition, the story was supposed to be in a private hospital....not the big municipal ones, where people died...
They come in boxes of 25,000.
