I don't know how to post an article, but somebody ought to put this thread in Breaking News with the addition that Ophelia is expected to be a Catagory 2 when it hits the Atlantic Beach/Shackleford Banks area. Everybody seems to be treating this storm ho-hum, but it may turn out to be a real pain, especially flooding in the Eastern part of the state. Those folks have had alot to deal with with Floyd Isabel and Alex (no debit cards either!!!!!!!)

Fortunately...the place we stay isn't beach front and one of those large hills on the feeder roads that lead down to Ocean drive...around mile marker 16-17 I believe. It'll be safe...couple of shingles...but just doubting being able to go down there due to emergency workers, power, commercial availability. Plus the fishing is going to SUCK!!!111eleventydammit!!

People were auctioning off items to benefit charities after Katrina, and I just decided to look to see what was going on today.

Per the NHC:

Landfall is "The intersection of the surface center of a tropical cyclone with a coastline. Because the strongest winds in a tropical cyclone are not located precisely at the center, it is possible for a cyclone's strongest winds to be experienced over land even if landfall does not occur. Similarly, it is possible for a tropical cyclone to make landfall and have its strongest winds remain over the water. Compare direct hit, indirect hit, and strike."

North Carolina Governor Warns About Ophelia- Wed-Fri Event
CNN

Posted on 09/14/2005 2:55:23 PM EDT by libtoken

Snips from the NC Governor who was on CNN:

He hears this storm will enter Carteret County about 8 pm and finally leave the Outer Banks sometime on Friday.

Because of the slowness, the expected storm surge will be worse, 9-11 feet rather than the 5-7 predicted, and it will be 9 inches of rain east of I=95.

If you flooded in Isabel, in Alex, this will be worse. He said there are 61 shelters open, and the National Guard has been activated, but they can't come rescue you until Ophelia leaves and the winds die down. He wanted everyone who has been issued a mandatory or voluntary evacuation notice and is still waiting for the hurricane to come to go to the shelters now.

He said the barrier islands will be hit both ways, as the storm surge pushes water over and up rivers and sounds, then as the storm leaves the surge water will be pushed back out the other way and overrun the islands.

FEMA has sent an advance team, but they won't be able to start making assessments and bringing in the aid to where it is needed until Ophelia leaves on Friday.

NN, here's a link that you might consider adding to your hurricane threads (but I'm hoping you don't have any more threads):

We've got nothing except overcast skies. And a few rain drops here and there.
