I can't handle this. I could never, ever leave my pets behind. The thought of it makes me sick.

Me either. But unfortunately, some of these pets weren't "left behind" on purpose -- their owners drowned.

A group of evacuees from New Orleans arrived in Milwaukee this afternoon. Many of them had their dogs.

One man had 6 dogs and said that the NOPD wouldn't help him, telling him to abandon the dogs and walk out. He said that the NOPD was trying to starve people out, refusing to even give them water.

The 82nd Airborne got him and his dogs to safety.

You can't just sit on your roof forever, if the helicopters won't take your pets what are you gonna do?

It may sound stupid, but I couldn't leave my German Shepard behind. Period. I would float out on a piece of freaking debris until I hit dry ground, before I left her behind. If I had to walk 100 miles with her, and beg for some scraps for her, that's what I'd do. She's my best friend.

"I could never, ever leave my pets behind."

I've had pets my whole life but if it came to my dog or myself, fido's going down.

If it were, for example, take my children and live, or stay with the pet and probably die...I would leave the pet. Actually, being from the west and as the father in the home, I would probably put the animal down before I did so.

I heard Glenn Beck this morning tell a story about a little girl who was crying not to leave her cat behind as the family was evacuating and Katrina was hitting them. The father went back for the cat and on the phone, the family could hear the winds tearing up their house as the father looked for the cat.

Needless to say, neither the cat nor the father has been seen since.

It's a matter of priority.

Honestly, I couldn't either. We have three cats and a dog, and I couldn't give any of them up.

On the other hand, because I'm hurricane-phobic, we'd have loaded the pets up and driven to high ground. I would never ride out another hurricane again.

You and me both. I would have WALKED out prior to the hurricane. If you stay you lose your home, family and pets.

If you WALK out while you can...at least you are SOMEWHERE and STILL have your family and pets.

So, stay and lose everything.

Walk out, or get out however you can and get to someplace else. It's the same difference. You might be able to find a shelter at least until you could go to a church and ask for help. At least you are all together and in charge of your OWN destiny instead of depending on someone else to guide your life at that point when everything is destroyed.

I love animals, just about any kind of the 4-legged persuasion. Did anyone hear, as I did, the the initial airlift rescues would not allow evacues to bring pets? One small boy had his dog taken away from him and left behind. Imagine ...
