Public Skeptical New Orleans Will Recover Criticism, but little outrage, for Bush's and federal agencies' response to hurricane
by David W. Moore
GALLUP NEWS SERVICE
...
Despite widespread criticism of the response by Bush and, separately, the federal government, to the problems caused by the hurricane, the public seems on balance only mildly critical. Forty-two percent say Bush did a "bad" (18%) or "terrible" (24%) job, but 35% rate his response as either "great" (10%) or "good" (25%).
...
When asked to identify who was most responsible for the problems in New Orleans after the hurricane, 38% of Americans said no one was really to blame, while 13% cited Bush, 18% the federal agencies, and 25% state and local officials.
...
Few Americans feel that any top official in the agencies responsible for handling emergencies should be dismissed from office -- just 29% say someone should be fired, while 63% disagree.

Sympathy factor. The more Nagel and Blanco talk, the more they lose support. There are all ready people in my office who thought Nagel was a hero for telling the Feds to "Get off their a##" last Thur who think he is a complete dork today who should just shut up. Truth will get out. The more the truth of who did what to whom when, the more the anti-Bush numbers will sink. Truth is on his side as anyone who knows the FACTS can tell you. All ready you are starting to see people say things (Like Mayor Nagel did) Bush should just of ignored the LAW. Once feelings cool, this thing is ONLY going one way. Another thing Polls never control for the knee jerk anti-authority reactions. That is why polling Likely voters is always so much closer to actual election results
bttt
The other factor, "Aw, we will be ok, the "News" is always hyping and exagerating, it will not be so bad".
BUMP
Below your answer. Guess the consultant went right out and faxed his talking points out on the Moveon fax line.
I have never been more let down by this administration AWest Since Aug 18, 2005
Remember that the Buchanan, third party crowd will claim to be Republicans who support Bush on everything else, but oppose him on whatever the topic of the moment happens to be.
I bet this has been part of the Dems' playbook since Bush's bullhorn moment after 9-11, to blunt any bump he might get. It's typical after a national crisis for people to rally around the President. By raising their self-righteous ire, the Democrats are attempting to prevent or minimize the natural bump that Bush would get in response to something like this. It's pure politics, and something that, as I said, has probably been planned since 9/11. I'm waiting for the secret memo to make its way to the Washington Times which will confirm that this has been the plan of the Dems all along.
You're talking to a wall... :)
I doubt the 13% was all black people. Heck, I doubt if 6% were black Americans.
Lord love you for that on the ground report! Will be getting my hair cut tomorrow!
Well, I am constantly amazed at some people's ability to do just that :-)
You got me, I'm a dim because I don't mindlessly follow propaganda from both sides. Yes, Blanco did a piss poor job in the days prior and following Katrina. BUT, a disaster of this magnitude, could not be handled solely locally by any stretch of the imagination. And to say that FEMA only advises and provides aid money is ludicrous. People are talking about blame, and believe me, there is plenty of blame to be passed around. If there was food and water available, plus means of distributing them (helicopters), why wasn't it distributed ASAP instead of days after? Yes, the dims in charge in Louisiana have their share of blood on their hands, but this goes up much higher than them.
With that in mind, I'm certain that the backlash against Bush and FEMA would have been much greater had the left not chosen to respond to EVERY bit of bad news with a knee-jerk "it's Bush's fault!" reaction.
Actually no it would not since the FACTS of how the Disaster Response system works are all on Bush's side. AS the facts come out the numbers will only move one way. The Left got in a sucker punch because everyone on the Right was all ready to be bipartisan in the face of a disaster. The message a lot of average people are going to take from this is "Man, Dems are Dems 1st and Americans way down towards the bottom of the list." As the Right REPONSES to the nonsense, the momentum is all shifting Bush's way. One again the Hysteric Left, and it's lap dog the Dinasour Media" WAY over reached. Like most things. Those who hate Bush, Hate Bush still, those who Like Bush LIke Bush still, and in the middle is a big 1/3 that either do not care of do not have any strong feelings about it.
"Only 13% blame Bush...MSM promises to try harder until that number tops 50%."
A disturbing mental image.
Looks like the Dems and the Media (sort of redundant) are going to have to refine their Bush-bashing a bit more so they can do better the next time there's a natural or terrorist disaster.
All while the Dems/Libs were calling us racists
