Today, a different kind of line was crossed. The Times has messed with Texas. You dont tug on Supermans cape, you dont spit in the wind, and most of all you dont mess with Texas if you have even a shred of common sense.
KTRK-TV, the ABC affiliate in Houston has caught (hat tip: Austin Bay) the New York Times Company slurring Houstons rescue efforts in a sneaky yet stupid maneuver. How do like this for the first sentence in a story about Houstons sheltering efforts on behalf of the evacuees, by Houston-based NYT reporter Simon Romero?:
No one would accuse this city of being timid in the scramble to profit from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina."
Excuse me? The City of Houston has thrown open its heart, pocketbook, homes, churches, schools, and all public facilities to its neighbors in need. The Astrodome was prudently stocked with disaster supplies because nearby Galveston might need them in the event of a big hurricane. Without a thought, Houston stepped up and became evacuation central. It will cost Houston taxpayers a lot of money, but nobody is giving a thought.
And you paint this city as a crass profiteer on its neighbors misery. That is beyond despicable. It is crazy.

I bet the NYT is thinkin that all that gubmint money given to these unfortunates will be spent in Houston, and therefore it is taking advantage of money that could have been given to New York.
Thanks! I will send them tomorrow!
By the way, glad you decided to make Houston your home. As some folks down here say, "I wasn't born a Texan but I got there as fast as I could!"
San Antonio is ready and willing to accept the "refugee" Saints.
The New York Times is a joke. A not very funny one, but a joke nonetheless.
I misquoted the paper......little ole (and I do mean small town) Big Springs has taken 100 families with school age kids, not the 25 I stated earlier.
Not mentioned in my earlier post....Houston has even taken in the pets for many of the people they are housing, and are caring for, feeding and allowing visitations for these pets.
And I heard something about Odessa taking some people, but I don't remember the number if stated.
Yes it has! They are going out at night and getting drunk, coming back and causing disturbances for all the thankful evacuees and now they have a curfew. Not to mention how they trashed Astroland after a FREE day at the park. Astroland is now shut down so they can regroup and clean up. This is just the beginning of the sorrows all the fine people that have come to the rescue will get paid back. Sad.
If anyone on this thread still subscribes to the NY Times, drop your subscription and write a letter to the Editor that you will no longer be reading a biased, slanted, lying newspaper like the Times.
I did this during the last election.
I blame you.> OF COURSE...it is my fault..Katrina..I apologize to the Katrina refugees...right now on Free Republic!
Yeehaw!
Somebody find out where this puke lives in Houston and publish his address.
I found three Simon Romero's listed in Houston on my favorite people search website and will try to locate this puke: http://www.zabasearch.com
I remember reading that the evacuees had been there for days before they finally got fed up and broke into the storage areas and took control of the food and water. There were supplies in the Superdome, but nobody was giving them out.
Profits? I sure as Hell have not seen any -- quite the opposite! That is outrageous!
Houston and the citizens of Houston have been more than helpful. They have essentially invited half a city to come visit and be put up for free for an extended period of time.
Uh, Oh. Better not to say,"...the only time LA had decent government was during Reconstruction." Hope you don't live in the South saddled with those sentiments. To Southerners, Reconstruction was the most horiffic period in our history. Newly elected carpetbaggers, blacks, and scalliwags kept the South broke for years paying Southern legeslature's bills for such things as an ocean of fine Kentucky bourbon, Virginia hams, and even in at least one instance in MS, a red satin corset. Hundreds of courthouses were burned to cloud the titles to our land, plantation owners who had always treated their slaves well, were horrified that the Union had no PLAN to care for freed slaves, and no money or economy of thier own to pay for their hire. There are estimates that there were as many as 50,000 freed slaves who wandered the the roads of the South until they succumed to disease and starvation.
Because of the horrors of Reconstruction, the South voted solid for Democrats until Reagan. Texas didn't even have a two party system until then, about the time the Dems were highjacked by those who, at length, finnally succomed to the lessons well taught by the carpetbaggers. Hillary comes to mind. Reagan Democrat here.
You bet! This article really ticks me off. The NY Slimes is deserving of that name. I hope folks really get after them. Time to stop subscriptions, folks, if there's anyone here crazy enough to take it, that is. Grrrrr.
OOOH, what YOU SAID!
I tuned in too late to catch what Geraldo was upset about. What did they say about him?
I put money in the cuss jar.
