Gramsci believed that Leninist tactics would not be effective in Western Europe because the economic and social structure of the West was different from Czarist Russia.

Therefore he advocated a "war of position" versus a "war of maneuver."

Chavez may believe that the Venezuela of 2005 is as different from the Italy of 1935 as the Italy of 1935 was from the Russia of 1917.

Trying to imagine what Henry Clay would be declaming about this situation right about now. And Sam Clemens, too. Both of them, if brought back right now, would probably be amazed. Clay would be too much in control of himself to say this, but Clemens might just utter a WTF.
