Budget reductions
Las Vegas Review-Journal ^ | 9/4/05

Last spring, the Republican Congress passed a series of budget resolutions vowing to get a handle on out-of-control federal spending. In the next few weeks, the GOP must decide whether to follow through -- and Americans will discover whether today's congressional Republicans swear allegiance to fiscal responsibility or Big Government Lite.

Under the budget resolution, some 16 committees in the House and Senate must produce bills to enact savings by Sept. 16. Among the proposals likely to emerge, according to The Washington Post: cuts in Medicare's rate of growth; a reduction in farm subsidies by 2010; tighter student loan rules; and reductions in the projected growth of other entitlement and welfare programs.

All of this, of course, will bring howls of derision from Democrats, who bristle at being characterized as spendthrifts, but never seem to embrace any effort to trim the federal budget and prefer to tackle the deficit by raising taxes on productive Americans.

But getting these proposals out of the House -- where Republicans have a 28-vote edge -- shouldn't be too difficult. And under congressional rules, none of these bills may be filibustered by obstructionist Senate Democrats.

The stated GOP goal of sobering up congressional drunken sailors is defensible and proper. But let's see next month if members of the party of limited government have the gumption to stand up for what they claim to believe.

As long as Bush and Congress support the terrorists in Israel, there should be not one cut in benefits to American citizens...

Thank goodness for the House trying to reign in spending. If I remember correctly, a large part of this is because of Congressman Mike Pence.

It's going to be tough to cut spending when the FedGov will be picking up a lot of the bill for the cleanup and rebuilding on the Gulf Coast.

Unfortunately the first items to fall should include the Gravina Island Expressway Bridge and the Don Young Way, two Alaska bridges grossly unneeded when you consider the real needs of the numerous people of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama...and more to come. Also quick to fall should include the homeland security funding for North Pole, Alaska, unless that town soon will serve as the new headquarters for the United Nations. Oh, yeah, and anything named the "Robert C. Byrd memorial...

We need to cut useless projects to help pay for rebuilding the Gulf Coast.

Perhaps we can compile a list for our DC servants to use as a guideline.

I'll start.

A one year moratorium on Public Service Announcements - no more "Click it or ticket" ads, etc.

"Click it or ticket"

That one seems like a typical case of using advertising money, that is, mandatory free public service announcements, for trivial campaigns. Is there a person who drives a car still unaware of what happens in high-speed vehicle accidents? If they are advertising the presence of police officers, they could do it better by actually having police officers present in the community.
