‘One John Wayne dude’ tackles relief efforts - Lt. Gen. Russel L. Honoré (mayor Nagin term for him)

The man in charge of coordinating the military’s hurricane response is a Louisiana native with previous experience in flood disasters who already has received high marks from one state official for his efforts.

Lt. Gen. Russel L. Honoré, the man in charge of U.S. Northern Command’s Joint Task Force Katrina, is a former 2nd Infantry Division commander.

Honoré, from Lakeland, La., led 2nd ID in South Korea from October 2000 until July 2002.

During that time he dealt with monsoon-season flooding on many Area I installations and oversaw flood prevention measures put in place following a disastrous 1998 flood that caused more than $150 million in damage to Area I bases.

Honoré is a man who announces his presence with authority.

In an interview with local WWL radio, New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin was expressing dismay at the lack of federal help for his city, but said of Honoré:

“I give the president some credit on this, he sent one John Wayne dude down here that can get some stuff done, and his name is Gen. Honoré, and he came off the doggone chopper, and he started cussin’ and people started movin’!

“And he’s getting some stuff done,” Nagin said. “They ought to give that guy — if they don’t want to give it to me, give him full authority to get the job done.”

Honoré was commissioned a second lieutenant of infantry in 1971. He also has served as commander, 4th Battalion, 16th Infantry Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Germany.

I am an Army Veteran, proudly served my God and country, and I also pray everyday, but yet I use his name in vain at times. Please, explain to me how I am a coward and a Godless fool.

Also, in regards to the LTG, it's about time someone with the leadership ability comes in and takes control of the situation. I am too tired of hearing people being the Monday morning quarterback and crying about what could have been done when there are people still needing our assistance and even worse, dying.

Let's start by asking this: are you _proud_ to use the Lord God's name in vain? Or, are you repentant? It makes a difference in my answer.

OK, I'll play along...

Yes, I am proud to say it.

And yes, I am repentant.

Generals take their orders from civilians. I'm a Stanford educated small business owner and that means I could probably do that job better than a civil servant for life. Got that?

Well as a civilian you apparently don't have a clue about the military. Thankfully you are not giving the orders because you don't know squat. Actions speak loud. Within 24 hours of being given the order to move in, troops under Honore's leadership had shut down the looting and general anarchy in NO and started facilitating the largest military evacuation of civilians ever.

Secondly, if you are inferring that Honore is a "civil servant for life" then you'd better be thanking your sweet little small business rear end that there are compent people like him protecting you. When it comes to commanding and leading soldiers, your little paper from Stanford amounts to nothing.

He took the name of the Lord GOD OF THE UNIVERSE in vain to promote his his little sideshow in front of the cameras. I think you ought to evaluate where the real power is.

Well as a civilian you apparently don't have a clue about the military.

I've a very good friend who is a mustang marine officer, served in Vietnam, and he told me his officer training included the ten commandments until the know-betters in Washington worried that we might be training zealots. We lost our zeal for righteousness and we started losing battles.

There is simply no excuse for an "officer and a gentleman" using that language in front of rolling cameras--and if you think so--you are a flat out ignoramus. If I'm ignorant of the average military joe's pig-like mouth, than I thank the Lord for it.

Let me ask you this...

Am I any less of an individual since I say G.D.? No, I'm not.

Are you any less of a person to tell me that I am wrong for using the lord’s name in vain? No. Do you have the right to sit there and tell me that I should evaluate where the real power is? No. You have your beliefs, I have mine.

Also, his "little sideshow" might not be a sideshow at all. If you have ever served, you would know that the old school soldiers are like that. When I was in, I had seen time and time again, both enlisted and officers, using their brazen style to get things done. It's who they are, it's their personality.

Just out of curiosity, have you ever served your country?

I was being sardonic. I was hoping to hear both sides of your argument.

Yes, you are. You prove yourself a rebellious little fly in the eyes of a God who holds your breath in His hand.

"Yes, you are. You prove yourself a rebellious little fly in the eyes of a God who holds your breath in His hand."

That's YOUR opinion of me, even though you know nothing about me. Besides, I don't answer to you.

And how long ago was Vietnam? My father also served back then and worked his way through OCS, onto a successful career as an officer, and then to retirement. He has raised five successful children, and is twice retired, and is now a small to medium business owner himself. He cusses everyday, but that doesn't change my opinion of him. He is an "officer and a gentleman." And yes, he does say G.D. at times. Does that make him any less of a person?

Listen - as I've stated before, you have your opinion, I have mine. You know nothing about me, just like I don't know anything about you, but if you can honestly sit there and tell me that you are a better person than me, because you don't cuss and/or use the lord's name in vain, so be it.

Your problem and General Honore's problem and your Dad's problem is with God, not me. HE told you, "Thou shalt not take the Lord thy God's name in vain."

Take it up with Him.

Have you served in the armed forces?

No. That's rather obvious. I made the mistake of believing officers were still gentlemen--men of breeding and honor.

Then who are you to to sit there and judge me and tell me that I am a bad person if my problem is not with you?

You never did answer my question in regards to whether or not you ever served in the armed forces.

Again, good to see that you are so willing to judge many from the actions of few.

Also, you're welcome for your freedom. I'll be glad to send you a postcard when I go overseas here in a few weeks to defend your freedom, and your ability to judge me.

How is it that he is a coward? Only cowards throw words like that around.

Too bad that he doesn't live in 19th century...so that he could challenge you to a duel. We'd see who the coward really is. Them thar's fightin' words.
