Firefighting gear stockpile unused WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Nine stockpiles of fire-and-rescue equipment strategically placed around the country to be used in the event of a catastrophe still have not been pressed into service in New Orleans, five days after Hurricane Katrina, CNN has learned. Responding to a CNN inquiry, Department of Homeland Security spokesman Marc Short said Friday the gear has not been moved because none of the governors in the hurricane-ravaged area has requested it. A federal official said the department's Office for Domestic Preparedness reminded the Louisiana and Mississippi governors' offices about the stockpiles on Wednesday and Thursday, but neither governor had requested it.

When is CNN going to learn that THE GOVERNORS are the heads of the individual states, not the Federal Government?? When a D is in the White House and the Governor is an R.

There's a Democrat Mayor, a Democrat City Council, a Democrat Chief of Police, a Democrat Attorney General, a Democrat Governor, a Democrat Lt. Governor, 24 of 39 Louisiana State Senators are Democrat, 67 of 105 Louisiana State House Representatives are Democrat, there's a Democrat Representative in the House from New Orleans, and one of two Senators in the Senate is a Democrat.

The reason that someone has to ask for the equipment is that it needs to go to someplace and someone. Just sending it to "New Orleans" doesn't get it to the people who need it. Do you send it to the EOC? The Superdome? The Mayor's office? The Fire Chief's office? Which one's are functioning? Who is responsible to receiving the equipment and getting it out to the first responders? Do you just leave it at the first fire station that you see and leave it?
When the local officials ask for it they give this information. The best thing to do is ask for it before the hurricane hits and stage it outside the expected area to be affected.

Louisiana disaster plan, pg 13, para 5 , dated 01/00
'The primary means of hurricane evacuation will be personal vehicles. School and municipal buses, government-owned vehicles and vehicles provided by volunteer agencies may be used to provide transportation for individuals who lack transportation and require assistance in evacuating

Not exactly true. It's true they don't have water pressure, but pumper trucks aren't reliant on water pressure...they just need any sort of water...water in the street has been used to fight fires during the last few days. I saw them do it!

....attendance mandatory upon threat of withdrawl of all Federal disaster funding. It appears there are too many idiots who don't know the basic duties of their offices. Are you a conservative? A Republican? This sounds like Franklin Roosevelt or Bernard Baruch talking. Not even Hamilton hated the States that much, that he proposed allowing the federal government to dictate requirements for holding State office.
Governors hold office at the pleasure of the People. Mary Landrieu ran Gov. Blanco's campaign and came up with the last-minute "dirty trick" that got her elected over a better candidate, Bobby Jindal, a Republican immigrant from India. The People are paying in a bitter coin for their former folly in listening to Mary Landrieu's lie machine. Blanco is finita, washed up, and a massive millstone around Landrieu's neck. But that's all for the day after tomorrow, or sometime next month or the month after. Today's concerns press in at the moment.
But don't toss out the federal system or popular sovereignty just because a political-hack governor didn't make the grade in a crisis.

Are you a conservative? A Republican? I'm both. But as a parent doesn't think of political philosophy when he disciplines wayward children, there comes a time in a nation's history when the threat to national security is so great that extraordinary measures must be taken to preserve the lives of its citizenry. Every governor should know PRECISELY what is expected of them in coordinating with those on the national level to preserve the Constitutional mandate of protecting the lives of the People.

Interesting! I admit I was going by what the firemen said on one of the newscasts--that they couldn't fight the fires because there was no water pressure.

You SOB. You got to see her cry?? Mary and Mitch (Lt GOV.) has to be excited about Mitch's possibly of becoming Acting Gov.m as Blanco steps down. I do not think she will, but she should.
Mary spent some time on an interview talking about how her brother was out rescuing people and he was doing such a terrific job. Mary on the other hand has just been getting her hillary like face in front of the camera talking crap as she always has.
