Qatar gives 100 million dollars for US hurricane relief 1 hour, 26 minutes ago

DOHA (AFP) - The Gulf emirate of Qatar announced it will donate 100 million dollars to relief efforts for the US victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The aid was granted by Qatar's emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani "in the name of the government and the Qatari people," the official news agency QNA said.

Quoting a foreign ministry spokesman, QNA said: "Qatar expresses its sympathy and its solidarity to the US people and government in these painful circumstances and sends its condolences to the families of the victims in this humanitarian catastrophe."

Three other Arab countries -- Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates -- have also offered aid to the United States.

The US has fostered close relationships with governments in the Middle East. Some governments have helped the US despite the fact that it is unpopular with the people.

An example of this is that when a U2 (photo recon jet) crashed, the location was undisclosed for fear of problems with the government where the air base was in the Middle East.

The leaders of some of the smaller kingdoms know the US is trying to keep Muslim extremists in check and keep peace in the Middle East.

Peace and stability is good for the US and these governments.

Saddam Hussein was a major threat to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and smaller states than even Kuwait.

Such generosity and offers should not be forgotten, nor gone unrewarded.

As we should, if we are to be "peace" makers as the remaining superpower we must be fair about it. As an American I want no part of taking advantage of any nation. That is not to say I expect to turn the other cheek if some stick a finger in our collective eye.

Old Saddam wasn't just paying other Muslim nations for his protection, sadly his biggest protectors were our supposed allies.

LOL! That is EXACTLY what I gave Thursday evening. :) Our pastor is sending it to a church that he is very familiar with in Louisiana. The church, also, goes to those in need w/spiritual guidance. Thursday, I am making a huge donation to Salvation Army.

I don't think we will ever feel what we give is enough because these victims of Katrina just want water to live! And how many are even getting a decent night's sleep. It makes you want to dig deeper.

Thanks to Qatar for their generosity and every other country. USA has always been a giving nation - now we will see the hearts of the other nations by their response.

"I hope the $100 million goes to the Salvation Army and not the Red Cross." I agree with you 100% on that.

you know, qatar has always sounded like a country that had it's act together.

It depends on if you pronounce it like kutar (like guitar) or cutter:).

Acutally, I think they've been a pretty good ally, at least for an Arab country.

Hey, if the Mayor's banning them, not only is it two strikes against HIM, but it may be a plus for the RC!

We don't donate money out of kindness and charity?
I'm sorry you feel that way.

When the government donates money for disasters in other countries, it's political. That's just reality.

When the U.S. Govt. donates money for foreign disasters (or anything, really), it's political. That's just the way it is.

You can think it's 100% political. I don't.

The Mr, after returning from same last July confirmed for me that it is indeed CUtter.

In English it is pronounced Guitar. True over there they say CUtter, but the same oilfield people who for some reason in the 80's started insisting we say it the way they do, damn sure don't pronounce Germany, Italy, Mexico or Venezuela the way the locals do.

A Kuwaiti minister's comment on Katrina was that Allah would continue to punish the unbelievers.

These junior ministers do not speak for their governments.

Kuwait Donates $500 Million For Hurricane Relief

BTW, I'm not interested in retractions or apologies. But I am glad Kuwait remembered America now when our people are in need. It would be very disappointing otherwise.
