Bush sending active-duty troops to region damaged by hurricane

"Bush heard plenty, however, during more than an hour of meetings aboard his plane with state and local politicians about why it is taking so long to relieve the misery of so many people in New Orleans who have been living in squalor without the necessities of life.

"He heard some things he didn't want to believe at first," said Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La. "The president is starting to grasp the magnitude of the situation."

Four days after Katrina killed hundreds if not thousands, Republicans joined Democrats in shaking their heads.

"If we can't respond faster than this to an event we saw coming across the Gulf for days, then why do we think we're prepared to respond to a nuclear or biological attack?" asked former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, a Republican.

(**Poster Edit: No, it must be some evil black Democrat scum who is passing himself off as Newt. Those insidious Dems!!**)

Republican Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts called the government's response "an embarrassment."

The criticism stung for a president who won widespread praise for his handling of the terrorist attacks four years ago...

Hoping to turn the tide of opinion in his favor, Bush spoke four times publicly on Friday.

"The results are not acceptable," he declared at the beginning of the day.

I got news for you NEWT if a nuclear hit occurs the current situation will look like a picnic

The best way to prepare for a NUKE is to PREVENT it by going afer the terrorists where they live

The towers and the Pentagon were, what, 4 acres??? There really is NO comparison to 9/11.

My recollection is that the WTC site was 16 acres. Plus there were adjacent buildings that were damaged.

However, a major difference is that after 9/11, the dead were dead and the living were pretty much OK. Recall that the hospitals had their emergency teams waiting outside to receive the wounded on 9/11. They had very little to do. The rush to give blood resulted in only a suplus.

In New Orleans we have a large number dead (which seems to be some kind of Soviet-era State Secret), a very large number of sick and injured, and a much greater number of displaced refugees.

We're NOT. I know ... this has been my life's work for the last three years. As a nation, we're NOT ready for a WMD attack. Not at all.

Homeland security needs to be dissolved
