Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

My GOD!!!
Even ESPN's "Sports Reporters" is piling on the Katrina race-baiting bandwagon.
Nobody can tell me that this ain't orchestrated.
Hint: Jackson spent two extra days talking to the Communist Dictator of Venezuela. 12 hours after he resurfaced in the USA, the networks, the CBC and every dem snapped (it was described on this thread as "like turning a switch") into all-out attack mode.
There just might be some dots to be connected here.
Yes it is. He'll handle it well, I am confident of that.
My only serious disappointment with him (for this disater, I have other disappointments) was the more or less congratulatory tone of the pressers early last week. That tone changed to an appropriate tone on Friday.
Dems maneuvering on every front. Want to stall Supreme court hearings for Roberts. I just heard one say they should withdraw Roberts nom and have O'Conner stay and be Chief.
Pesky gnats, Schumer (IIRC) and the media can keep on buzzin' - events will unfold against their chatter because they are (praise the Lord) NOT in control.
It's going to be tough to top MTP with screaming, arm waving, histrionic Tim Russert though.
Like a herd of buffalo, or a flock of birds. That's how they're connected. But the weird thing is that I think it's always the same bird igniting flight of the flock from the wire.
according to directnic site, a lot of those trucks this morning on the webcam are from MCI, brining in the gear and supplies they need to restore phone service.
Still lots of traffic. I'd expect bare essential city operations in the next day or so.
One thing of note- nearly everything coming into the city has to have an armed escort. Police, military, whatever. Those looters and snipers have caused a lot of resources to be diverted.
Interestingly, Fox has been interviewing people at the Astrodome. One doctor said that many of these people have not been seen by a doctor in YEARS, if ever. They are dealing with hypertension, congestive heart failure, diabetics, etc. Doctor on now saying they need insulin and congestive heart failure meds.
Seems to me we also are seeing evidence of a complete failure of the New Orleans public health system.
Fox commentator said in some ways the peope in the Astrodome are BETTER OFF, because they are finally getting medical care!

Chertoff on Meet the Press right now giving it to em hard
I would say that NO public health was never very good...but you also have to have people willing to use it, too...back in the days when I had to take advantage of it (a down and out period between the end of college and the start of teaching), I would go to clinics at Charity Hospital. They had morning appointments and afternoon appointments. You'd have to get there at 8:30 in the morning and wait until your number was called. It might be two hours before it was your turn. But if you didn't get there early enough, you would have an extremely high number, and it would be 3 hours before you saw anybody.
Now I will admit that this was back in '87. But I can understand why people didn't necessarily want to go to clinics unless they had a critical problem.
Chertoff is making it very clear that it is the responsibility of the local govt. Matthews is ticking me off
There you go using logic again when everyone knows emotion is the way to go ... at least if you follow the example of the distaff leadership of LA :)
Re: Celine Dion-
I just posted this on this dumb celine dreams website that asks you to submit a fan's dream. Wish I had a way to blast her where she will read it.
http://www.celinedreams.com/
Briefly describe your fan dream here
My dream is for this p.o.s to leave the USA where she is a guest and not be allowed to return. This idiot went on Larry King and accused our President of horrible things. Shut up and learn how our government works before you open your entertainer's mouth. Many many many people here that made her what she is now will hate her forever and will boycott her. Enjoy what this country used to give you, Celine, because you will never see it again.
Were aircraft flying over the areas? It is possible to use a piece of metal (like roof flashing-has to be shiny though-a piece of broken glass or a mirror would work), and flash an SOS at passing planes, helicopters, etc. I think it's "long, short, long".
I know that is the last thing people would think of in this kind of situation, but I'm going to remember it.
Reporter from WWL....
French Quarter is 100% intact.
Completely dry, not even a puddle.
Saw this morning there was a bar open in the FQ. Locals were reminiscing by candlelight. Said the spirit of New Orleans will never die.
Yes...true, but I also heard she donated $1 million. She should still keep her comments to herself for awhile. It doesn't help.
Speakiing of Help, last night in Pontiac Michigan, was the ARTS BEATS and EATS festival. The music Group "Better than Ezra" performed. They are from New Orleans. They urged the crowd to go home after the concert and make a donation. They talked and sang a few songs they wrote about NO. Then the Events promoter came on after their set and announced that the Group donated their performance fee to a relief fund.
Not one word about Bush or Govs or mistakes or finger pointing.

"1:29 a.m. People Still Calling For Help
Emergency officials in Louisiana say they are still getting calls from people trapped and in need of rescue. Officials say they received about 1,000 such calls on Saturday, with some people saying they are still trapped in their attics. Authorities are using color-coded maps to locate anyone in need of rescue. They plan to go door-to-door if they have to, in order to find all remaining survivors."
I wonder if rescuers are using/can use police and army helicopters using infra-red radar, the type that are used to pick out the heat from human beings? Our police helicopters use them to pick up the image of thieves hiding in bushes etc. I wonder if this can show if people are alive in attics?? Does anybody know if this would work through metal roofs?
amom is in La, headed to BR to help
Unfortunately the need for gas has us all by the shorthairs.
No gasoline containers? That's BS! Ooops, better dump some more change into the cyber swear jar....
