President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

Are these fires being set.

Doesn't seem natural to have spontaneous combustion doing the dirty work.

Most of those fires were set after looting. Or Korean owned businesses were targeted.

Even the white store owners painted BLACK OWNED on their windows before they fled.

That Maxine Waters is one ugly woman.

Almost as stupid as she is ugly.

She favors a gorilla located in our local zoo.

Ugly, really ugly.

Did I say Ugly WHEW!

I believe that photo depicts the LA riots - not NOLA. Look at the file name.

Behind the scenes, a power struggle emerged, as federal officials tried to wrest authority from Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco (D). Shortly before midnight Friday, the Bush administration sent her a proposed legal memorandum asking her to request a federal takeover of the evacuation of New Orleans, a source within the state's emergency operations center said Saturday.

The administration sought unified control over all local police and state National Guard units reporting to the governor. Louisiana officials rejected the request after talks throughout the night, concerned that such a move would be comparable to a federal declaration of martial law. Some officials in the state suspected a political motive behind the request. "Quite frankly, if they'd been able to pull off taking it away from the locals, they then could have blamed everything on the locals," said the source, who does not have the authority to speak publicly.

A senior administration official said that Bush has clear legal authority to federalize National Guard units to quell civil disturbances under the Insurrection Act and will continue to try to unify the chains of command that are split among the president, the Louisiana governor and the New Orleans mayor.

Louisiana did not reach out to a multi-state mutual aid compact for assistance until Wednesday, three state and federal officials said. As of Saturday, Blanco still had not declared a state of emergency, the senior Bush official said.

"The federal government stands ready to work with state and local officials to secure New Orleans and the state of Louisiana," White House spokesman Dan Bartlett said. "The president will not let any form of bureaucracy get in the way of protecting the citizens of Louisiana."

Thank you for writing.

I got a nasty email from some producer at CNN a few days ago telling me not to write to them ever again.

So I guess their ratings just went down another point as I quit watching Scarborough on PMSNBC and listening to his rants against the president.

KCAL also showed footage of the emptied Convention Center...looks like they even are trying to clean the place up...I wouldnt be surprised if they clean that up quickly and make it the media center for the rebuilding, since they are parking those ships next to it.

I also think they will drain the city in record time, if FEMA lets out some of those performance based contracts (Halliburton?) I remember them saying the LA freeways wouldnt be rebuilt in a year, and they were done in 90 days...with a bonus for every day early they were. Boy did the Dems complain about that...

Yes I was mistaken.

Couldn't be from New Orleans the way the sun is setting in the back ground.

It requires people working together to get these things going...and this has been a great example of people choosing not to. And people died because of these games (I've been angry at the governor since day 2. Still think that the deaths of many are on her head.)
