President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WWL-TV New Orleans (via WFAA Dallas) - WWL-TV is operating from studios at Louisiana Public Broadcasting. CBS has a relay during the morning and afternoon. When available, use the CBS relay first as they have greater streaming capacity. Yahoo has also provided a relay.

WDSU-TV New Orleans - The news staff has started to return to temporary news studios near New Orleans. However, expect evening coverage from Hearst-Argyle sister stations WAPT Jackson and WESH Orlando when the New Orleans staff needs to take a break.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

WKRG-TV Mobile, AL - This station is providing good coverage of the situation to the east in Mississippi and Alabama. However, the station is now signing off at around 10:30pm CDT like WWL and WPMI.

WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

Shortly before midnight Friday, the Bush administration sent her a proposed legal memorandum asking her to request a federal takeover of the evacuation of New Orleans, a source within the state's emergency operations center said Saturday.

The administration sought unified control over all local police and state National Guard units reporting to the governor. Louisiana officials rejected the request after talks throughout the night, concerned that such a move would be comparable to a federal declaration of martial law.

I do not think she will stay, she has a sick hubby and she is not 100 percent herself. She also has been made to look like a left wing nut on the Court by the rabid libs and with the loss of her friend and former fellow graduate it will be too much. Enough is enough. I thank God for Our Great Chief Justice, he went through Hell the last few years beating back the libs. I think he would have retired and enjoyed his life sooner if Slick Willy was not the President. His wife died and the loneliness may have been a contributor to his death.

This is VERY DISTURBING. I have an idea, though. You know that emails to the White House will eventually be looked at, but it could take days. Emailing or calling anyone on a long weekend isn't going to attract attention.

Why don't you email Jeb Bush?? I've heard he's an email addict and he encourages emails to him from Florida constituents. It might be seen if you email that whole message to him. I got his email address from the Florida Governor's page. It's no secret. It's jeb.bush@myflorida.com

I know it's a shot in the dark but it might get attention. Jeb will know who to call.

Local tv interviewing refugees at Airport. Trying to ask if they are mad at the army for not coming sooner. People are saying hell no,,they were grateful to see them. Locals were scaring them to death.

Yeah right, Anne. And even you should know it takes 3-5 days to deal with a medium emergency. And so it has been.

Instant gratification fixes hath made fools of us all.

I love that city as much if not more than she does, and I labored in the fields, so to say, helping people who were the children of poverty and ignorance take their first steps out of that morass.

The people are people I love - the smells and the fears and the insularness, and the lack of vision sometimes, but good people who have made life in a difficult place.

I was one of those working poor. I was one who for years had no car, who probably would have been trapped if this storm had come before 1993.

But the blame-game is a no winner. The city, by not declaring the emergency a day earlier, let its own people down.

The city, by not devising ways the large number of poor couldn't ge transported to safety let its people down.

The governor, by freezing, let more people down.

Fema freaked as well, but who ever had to deal with an emergency at this scale?

But besides all of that, the fact is that it takes time to set up, time to get people on the ground, and time to get things heading in the right direction.

Blame yourself, Anne, for not lobbying the leaders of your beloved city to do more for emergency help. Blame yourself, Anne, for not lobbying for better hurricane protection, when people have been virtually screaming it out for a decade or more that New Orleans had inadequate protection against a really bad storm.

Anger, pointing fingers, stirring the pot with blame does not get clothes on the back of the naked, food in the stomach, shelter for the homeless. Instead of spending time pointing fingers, why aren't you there helping?
