President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

"Voodo ops, voodo ops. This is Eagle three, over." I have no idea what that means but it sounds cool...:-)

Hah! "Voodo Operations" is the call-sign for a local command-and-control center, and that call-sign was chosen by someone with a fine sense of humor.

I mean, it must be just as easy to get 100s of tons of food and water, and buses and a fleet of choppers into NO - as it is to get a couple of reporters in a van with a camera and a mic - right?

Yeah. I gathered something of that because the same voice also called "voodo base, voodo base." Forgive me. I'm ignorant as far as military jargon. I just find it incredible that we can listen over the Internet to this scanner. We can also decipher info from the exchanges. Fascinating stiff.

I have some good news. I was at a family cook-out this evening, which has two democrats and also a couple of dim bulbs who aren't political.

The general opinion was that this was no one's fault, it was a massive disaster, and that these people should get help. Several people had aleady donated hundreds to the Red Cross.

I was expecting a "blame Bush" fest, but that was not the case. I think that this effort by the leftists is not getting traction here in Indiana.

Thomas Jefferson bought the extended warranty. Wait til they get the repair bill! (it is in the fine print!)

(to refresh our history, Jefferson send emissaries to buy New Orleans from France, to control the Mississippi River....they ended up buying the entire Louisiana Purchase, for 3 cents an acre....and funding Napolean's future wars)

"Voodo ops, voodo ops. This is Eagle three, over." I have no idea what that means but it sounds cool...:-)

If you heard some of the later transmissions, it was easy to figure out that Eagle 3 is a helicopter. They are not happy with their orders. Eagle 1 said to Eagle 3 "I don't understand it either. I guess we're supposed to just keep flying tired".

When asked if they will rebuild the city, Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco (D) just stated on Fox that the Spirit of the People of New Orleans is "TITANIC!"

She is so stupid its funny! Just thought a little humor in the midst of the suffering couldn't hurt.
