Mayor to feds: 'Get off your asses'
CNN.com ^

Posted on 09/02/2005 11:14:43 AM PDT by Millee

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin blasted the slow pace of federal and state relief efforts in an expletive-laced interview with local radio station WWL-AM.

The following is a transcript of WWL correspondent Garland Robinette's interview with Nagin on Thursday night. Robinette asked the mayor about his conversation with President Bush:

NAGIN: I told him we had an incredible crisis here and that his flying over in Air Force One does not do it justice. And that I have been all around this city, and I am very frustrated because we are not able to marshal resources and we're outmanned in just about every respect. (Listen to the mayor express his frustration in this video -- 12:09)

You know the reason why the looters got out of control? Because we had most of our resources saving people, thousands of people that were stuck in attics, man, old ladies. ... You pull off the doggone ventilator vent and you look down there and they're standing in there in water up to their freaking necks.

And they don't have a clue what's going on down here. They flew down here one time two days after the doggone event was over with TV cameras, AP reporters, all kind of goddamn -- excuse my French everybody in America, but I am pissed.

Get off your own ass Nagin!! What the hell have you ever done to earn your pay???? Wasn't it your duty to coordernate the evacuation of NO before the storm hit? Didn't you have at least a week to get that job done? Where the hell was you Nagin? Where are you now, for that matter? I'll bet wherever it is it is airconditioned and complete with all the modern convineances known to man, with tons of food, well stocked liquor cabinet, wine cellar and plenty of Cuban cigars.

You have never done anything for NO, you putrid punk, so shut up and stop blaming everyone else for your own dereliction of duty!

Lisa Stark on ABC is now saying that the federal govt. can act only if the state requests help first, and this is one of the main reasons for the "slow" federal response.

When you posted ...

Same folks who were ordered to leave, right?

And by implication, Nagin thinks that his looters are normally in-control? But still looters all the same, right?

Q: Since when is POTUS responsible for ensuring that a city's disaster preparedness is adequate?

Q: Since when is POTUS responsible for ensuring that a city's police force has the equipment, manpower and moral compass to do stop looters and thugs instead of quitting- or worse, joining the thugs in the sacking of new Orleans?

Q: Since when is POTUS responsible for releasing state resources?

The answer to all of these is this: when POTUS happens to be a Republican.

What we are seeing in the Big Easy is the result of poor planning, poor utilization of public funds, poor local and state leadership, and hamstrung state and local law enforcement. Any blame, if such is appropriate, should be laid squarely at the feet of LA's governor, and new Orleans' mayor.

Somebody tell the mayor to get off his own a$$. All he does is get on the air and whine "gimme, gimme, gimme" while his own city drowns and burns. I'm growing weary of his blather, and I'm about to get off my a$$ and kick his.

Here's why there is no law and order in New Orleans. The cops looting with shopping carts.

Let's see. Undermanned, corrupt police force. No cops or security, or medical staff in Superdome. No shoot on sight for looters order. Tying levee pumps into local power net. Gee, Mr. Mayor. Any of those YOUR fault?

And if you, Mr. Mayor, had warned the people in a timely fashion of the pending disaster, and had mobilized the city's resources (like school buses for example) to aid in the evacuation, you'd not have to spend those resources in that manner at this time.

None deserved or earned. He is an obvious incompetant.

Yes, he's incompentent. No doubt, and that's not what I'm saying. He's trying to lay blame on the Governor and the President, and he's not accepting the responsibility of what his actions have caused.

I'm saying, if I was in his position now, I'd be pissed, too. He's not getting the support he needs from his Governor. I believe most of the blame for the "aftermath" of Katrina lay at the feet of Ms. Blanco. Period.

And for the comparisons to 9/11, I don't believe it's even close. For 9/11, we had an enemy, a rallying point. We don't have that here. For 9/11, we lost some big buildings, and 3,000 people, not an entire city, and probably much more than 3,000 people, with 1,000,000+ homeless. With 9/11 we had a competent mayor working with a competent Governor. Here we have neither.

The rallying point here has to be that we're all Americans, and we have to take care of our own. It's going to take some national pride (and I believe we'll see that), it's going to

The mayor is getting his orders from teh DNC at this point and they will make it as vicuious and couterproductive as they can get away with.

The mayor is something of a conservative, a Republican even (Oh, I know, that makes him a RINO, yadda, yadda...) and has been a critic of the Governor for sometime. Its funny how we often jump to conclusions here.

Just a note from a former Grappler...the Grapple is a salvage ship. Sort of a honkin big tug with some ability to crane and lift things and a nice compliment of Navy divers.

USA Today-

Mayor C. Ray Nagin called for a voluntary evacuation of the city at 5 p.m. Saturday. He said he would most likely be more forceful about making people leave Sunday. For the tourists stuck in town, he had some different advice.

"The only thing I can say to them is I hope they have a hotel room, and it's a hotel room that's at least on the third floor and up," Nagin said. "Unfortunately, unless they can rent a car to get out of town, which I doubt they can at this point, they're probably in the position of riding the storm out."
