New Orleans City Council President: "Maybe God's Going To Cleanse Us"

NEW ORLEANS, September 1, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The popular adage, "there are no atheists in the trenches" sums up the truth that in times of disaster it is natural for people to turn to God, for help and also for an explanation. The devastation wrought by hurricane Katrina has brought that reality home to the United States, particularly in the affected regions.

. . . New Orleans City Council President Oliver Thomas after witnessing the horrors first hand and hearing talk of Sodom and Gomorrah commented, "Maybe God's going to cleanse us."

The theme of cleansing or purification has become a frequently discussed topic as the tragedy in the affected states unfolds. European papers have suggested that Katrina was the punishment the US received for failing to sign onto the Kyoto accord, Islamic militants have rejoiced that "private" Katrina has joined in the holy war against the U.S. for - among other things - the Iraq war. Some have even suggested that the hurricane was God's punishment on the U.S. for cooperating in the removal of Jews from the Gaza strip.

However, beyond these speculations is a more general acknowledgement that New Orleans, the epicentre of the disaster, was a "sin city" which harboured few rivals. The New Orleans "southern decadence" festival which was to take place Labour Day weekend, is described by a French Quarter tourism site as "sort of like a gayer version of Mardi Gras" which is "most famous (or infamous) for the displays of naked flesh which characterize the event," with "public displays of sexuality . . . pretty much everywhere you look."

Oh no.....this thread will be pulled.

You cannot talk of this idea of God's retribution on this site because I was told there is no need for this type of discussion.

Free Republic is not free.

You need to realize this and watch what you say here.

The republican party owns this site and the First amendment does not apply.

You will be told that you need some tin foil and that any comments such as yours will not be tollerated.

It amazes me at the people here who profess to be Christians taking glee in the masses suffering and blaming it on God wiping out sin.

Ignorant to the bone.

"It rains on the just and the unjust."

This is why we can't determine for sure if the wrath of God has been visited on New Orleans. However, anyone who arrogantly rejects the Bible and the God who wrote it is shortsighted and foolish. At the very least, natural disasters teach us that this life and its material pleasures are oh, so temporary, but human relationships are precious. The Bible says the only thing that is truly long-lasting is love of God and our fellow man.

Pay no attention to these idiots. If God wanted to kill the gays, the storm would have hit during their festival. Nature was created by God and it is an independant system operating on it's own.

C'mon, Tia. Please don't do this. Be one of the prevailing cooler heads. If enough of us can manage to NOT respond to the kind of bilge you cited--apart from reporting it as obvious abuse--the forum will quickly clean itself up. We need clear-thinking FReepers like you to stick around, especially us fellow mitten citizens.

Diver, I am saddened that you have not been suspended at the least. You deserve to be banned. God did not unleash a monster to smite the gulf coast, but you can bet your sorry ass He is watching our reactions to the devastation.

His grace and mercy have been abudantly bestowed upon me.

And yet your reaction to what has happened to the least of His brothers seems to be "Well, they had it coming to 'em."

You. Just. Don't. Getit.

I hated to see exnavychick leave.....I understand people come and go all the time...but to head over to CP after the way they trashed her after she announced her delivery on FR? She should find that thread and read it and then see if she would like to stay at CP. Come back exnavychick....FR is still a great place.....

i agree, people need to stop the raving.
prophecy has been laid out that all this would happen, wars, famine, natural disaster.. not that there's been 5 minutes in history where we haven't had these things, but they're all becomming more intese. the world will end, eventually, and there's nothing we can do. so people need to stop raving and live life.

Tiamat has been bashing FR for quite some time on other boards and has just been looking for a reason to leave....now she can call everyone a racist, etc....and make a grand exit. It is a joke!

I will never understand how people let a message board become so much a part of their daily lives. Lighten up people....FR is still a great place!

God didn't kill innocents. The Storm did. God allowed the deaths because of freewill. Did those people have an opertunity to leave and didn't? It's about our freewill and God will not interfere with it.

About death... To some it is horible, to others it's a means to be closer to God. Which is worse, trying to survive in the cesspool or being closer to God?

God isn't in the killing business, he leaves that to us.

We all will be judged by our deeds and now is the time to prove our faith and help our brother and sisters. It is now that our faith has to be proven.

I didn't realize that exnavychick was gone.

I also didn't realize that other forums exist outside of FR. I'm such a junkie. What is CP?

It's just entertaining the possibility, I doubt anyone truly believes it. We don't know Gods plan, but the fact that NO culture and liberal govt made this whole problem 1000 times worse than it had to be is fact.
