Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

not sure what the number of guard troops who have actually deployed are. also, do they have combat air capabilities? its going to be hard for them to run all over the city in trucks and small boats to take these guys out, they need helicopter gunships.

General Jordan (?) calling EOC from Superdome w/ 'situation urgent' request for buses to transport 3,000 people.

Between the lines, his voice is saying 'yesterday !' (imho)

It's unclear how many perps vs. how many LE's/troops but at the moment it appears the FF are holding off the criminals on their own. It sounds like a couple of police/deputies may have been shot by the thugs.

If the Scientologists are truly sincere in their wish to help with food, water, and money, bring it on... It's time to save lives, not play games and be self-serving, and that's where I was coming from in my original Tom Cruise/Mission Impossible post. I guess I have knee-jerk reactions when I hear the word Scientologist.

Good God - I have stayed away from the TV to decompress a bit just in time to hear this.

We did the same. Turned off the news and watched comedies from Netflix for an hour or so- came back and turned on the tv to hear that. AAAARGH!

Thought it sounded like he knew who was in charge, and was getting frustrated having to wait for the resources... What was funny was that it started off as a request to get info from FEMA, and by the end it was clear that the military was the true coordinator now. What is astounding is that the local govt is completely out of the process now, this is a federal/military operation now.

That was Tues. Its Wednesday and Thursday that the vacuum was really exposed. Not sure what you're saying. There have been reports of policeman quitting on the job. Surely you have seen that? Have you not seen the blog reports of desperate hospital workers. Are you suggesting this disaster doesn't need a leader to show leadership and motivate these workers? I haven't a clue what your point is but it probably is not worth wasting time over.
