28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.
Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."
Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.
The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Tropical Storm 12
Instead, we the viewers are out here watching this tragedy unfold feeling so helpless.
I hear you ......... once again!
;-)
Gotta go feed the kitties and the pooch.
Thx.
Agree!
I just caught the tail end of her presser...she is wonderful; articulate, reassuring; and centered. Lord, she handled the press jackals well.
Some folks like the media crews and others may be rinsing off with bottled water
Can you paraphrase some of these idiotic questions for us cubicle-trapped people?
The President was outstanding in reassuring people hit by the storm in Mississippi, who have already started cleaning up. Now he is meeting with Nadin and Blanco.
Amazing...I know what you mean about that word..yet it is so apparent with her. How wonderful you were able to meet her:)
- president now in LA
I did not hear that. If what she said is true I would imagine some people were stretching the truth, ungrateful, did not want to wait any longer even though they were out of immediate danger.
I do wonder if she considered the sources.
I did hear a man on Rush (Roger H was subbing) who lived in NO and put the blame on the locals. He said something about when he gets back & rebuilds, he will get his pickett sign.
Roger H said "The locals know who bears much of the blame."
I do have to stop and remind myself what FEMA had to work with and the obstacles they have had to overcome. The nation expected the same mobilization as 9/11.
The media has not considered the variables. Rudy vs. numbnut mayor and gutless gov. Sure, 9/11 had some confusion int he first moments, but my God, it did not take them 5 days to get their act together.
Go back to the beginning. The people were hearded into the Superdome and then what was the plan? After all was said & done the plan was to say "Bye, Y'all come back now hear?"
And as for Texas. Bulls' balls. Their cattle has them and Texans have them. (That was a compliment in case it did not come across that way) If I wasn't a Virginian, I'd be a Texan.
President Bush on the ground now in Kenner, La.
Nagin and Blanco with the President.
Fox news alert...Pres. Bush on the way to NO...will he be on the ground in the city? Earlier reports had him speaking from the airport. Prayers for his safety. Bush now speaking with officials on tarmac. Looks like Nagin speaking with him now...seems cordial. Also Governette Blanco there as well.
Because the media and the politicians are incompetent. They have no idea how to put together a big picture, and must therefore fall back on the well-trodden path of issue-based commentary.
DeLay on Fox - the delays in help are because there's lack of communication between the local, state, and fed levels.
They have 85 showers available. Unfortunately, instead of the number of evacuees they expected to get, it's grown to twice that amount. I just heard on local radio, they are trying to move a lot of people to San Antonio, Austin and Dallas.
