President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Personally, I really don't have a problem with them showing dead bodies, because that's what is happening and I don't really believe in bridling the press from showing reality.

I agree; have no problem with showing bodies on TV to illustrate the magnitude of the problems (hopefully from an angle that renders them anonymous), but Shep Smith should still be rendered unconscious just on principle. That hyperactive tabloid twit is totally useless.

News of the Weird: (From NOLA)

Ant balls not an urban myth

In addition to all of the other horrors befalling New Orleanians during the flood was the creepy discovery that red ants form themselves into floating clusters to avoid drowning. As Dante Ramos and I paddled along Carrollton Avenue on Wednesday, I saw two glittering, golf ball-sized masses of ants floating beside our canoe.

And who is to question why one did not leave. Perhaps a lack of available flights by the time it was confirmed that NO was the target of Katrina?

Try it again. I spent a good chunk of Sunday fussing at the phone while my mother tried to talk some sense into my cousin. While there are certainly some who truly didn't have the means to get out, there are others who just plain didn't want to, for whatever reason.

Thanks for responding. I was thinking that the president was probably trying to encourage the Governor to declare martial law so he could send in the Army and Marines to help with law enforcement vs just search and rescue sort of stuff. But if there are problems with martial law and you think none of them want it, then I'll have to re-evaulate.

2:48 P.M. - Gov. Blanco: "Thousands" are believed to be dead. And between 200 and 300,000 people still need to be evacuated from the city. 2,400 people are still waiting to be evacuated from the Superdome.

One official said the Army Corps of Engineers are currently driving pilings, dumping sand, into the breaches in the levee. Concrete barriers will go up after the sand is laid down. They will assess the pumps, and it could take as long as one month before the water is completely drained from the city. The Army Corps is being escorted to the levees by State Police.

Blanco said 12,000 National Guard troops from various regions in the nation are being deployed to the area, bringing the total number of troops to 40,000. The Governor added that looters will be dealt with. Blanco said Baton Rouge has its own concerns with refugees, who have reportedly been causing similar trouble in the state capital.

Hospital evacuations are going well. Chalmette and Tulane Hospitals are emptied.

No casualty list reported yet.

#
3:06 P.M. - (AP): Fights and fires broke out, corpses lay out in the open, and rescue helicopters and law enforcement officers were shot at as flooded-out New Orleans descended into anarchy Thursday. "This is a desperate SOS," the mayor said.

Anger mounted across the ruined city, with thousands of storm victims increasingly hungry, desperate and tired of waiting for buses to take them out.

"We are out here like pure animals. We don't have help," the Rev. Issac Clark, 68, said outside the New Orleans Convention Center, where corpses lay in the open and the and other evacuees complained that they were dropped off and given nothing -- no food, no water, no medicine.

#
3:09 P.M. - (AP): The Bush administration intends to seek more than $10 billion to cover immediate relief needs in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, congressional officials said Thursday, and lawmakers made plans to approve the request by the weekend.

Several officials said $10 billion would cover immediate costs for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the government's front-line responder in cases of natural disasters. Several hundred million dollars would also be provided to fund the Pentagon's disaster relief efforts, congressional aides said.

Why isn't the American Red Cross there NOW?

The Red Cross bugged out of N.O. before the storm, indicating that there was nowhere safe there. In that respect, the writing was on the wall.

God bless you and I will pray for your family.
