President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Just heard Congress will be convening on this within 24 hours. All the problems will be solved.

So which network is giving the best coverage? I have it on Fox but think I'm missing a lot of news
Congress is convening an emergency session.
Lugsoul - Is it your understanding the Mayor and Governor have not instituted Martial Law and thus our military cannot come help law enforcement in New Orleans?
Parents with Infants, then with children and then the elderly and young, able, men... last!
Dbl dittos to that, AIT.
We are a diffuse and distracted people. Too many amusements and toys. To much deception.
Absolutely not. They are opportunistic depraved animals. They PLANNED this the first time the realized the police would be busy.
correct. The DoD spokeman and that general were very clear on that.
In a nutshell, this act bans the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines from participating in arrests, searches, seizure of evidence and other police-type activity on U.S. soil. The Coast Guard and National Guard troops under the control of state governors are excluded from the act.

Godspeed to our guys....and good hunting.
This is far from the severity of the gangs, but I just talked with a friend whose family lives in south MS, just north of Hattiesburg in a small town.
She hasn't heard from them since the storm. The family had several commercial chicken houses (through Tyson or Sanderson Farms) and were suppliers.
She said with no electricity there is no way to keep feeding and watering thousands (and I mean thousands) of chickens in those houses. The trucks would come in normally every 3 days or so and bring a fresh supply of food. But with trees down, roads blocked, chaos, etc., she doubts that is happening.
She also doubts that the chicken houses could have withstood the 80 MPH winds that came through there.
Of course, she's mainly concerned about her family, hoping to hear something soon.
Just thought I'd pass this on -- as just another example of how this could affect the rest of the country also.
Whoops, those looters have gone and done it now. Someone's going to form a commitee!
Out of control looting in Convention Center area...
About time the critters do something!
To pass an appropriation bill for relief efforts, that's all.
Amend Posse Comitatus for natural disaster situations, if it hasn't been already!
DONE. Whitehouse. Reps next.
