Why am I not surprised? I understood it was below the Missisippi River but I had never read where it was below sea level so I just figured I didn't have a clue.
Was there several years ago with the Norman North Band for a competition and we took one of the riverboat dinner cruises after spending the afternoon in the French Quarter. We were also at the Aquarium which looked directly out on the Mississippi River. Wonder what happened to the Zoo and the Aquarium?
Florida knows hurricanes...
Makes sense to me, but do you think anyone would admit it at this point. I suspect they want to get the people out and settled before dropping the big bomb on everyone. There is a place where they open the Mississippi to Ponchatrain to drain off excess flood waters on the Miss... actually causing a silting problem in Ponchartrain... the whole system has been a disaster waiting to happen in more ways than one.
Isn't that the truth.
My dad played for N.C. State and the only two players he ever genuflected for were Pete and David Thompson.
And I loved his dad. And Ellen's dad was the legendary Smith Barrier.
And I'm sure it will be on ALL the channels.
The buses look to have water lapping at the top of their hoods.
Making them practice for what lies ahead...
I think the zoo is okay, I saw shots of the giraffes earlier today.
There are no words.
It truly looks like some kind of linear nuclear detonation.
The Grand Casino in Gulfport was picked out of the water and deposited on Rt. 90.
I went to Manhattan the week after 9/11 and it was unspeakable.
With no disrespect intended, this is even more so.
Surreal...
The river can dump into the lake, but I hope that spillway is closed.
The normal LP level is 1 foot above sea level.
Surge brought the lake to about 15 feet above SL.
Might have been kept too high before hurricane?
Now drained down to 3 feet above SL.
B52 required to lower it faster, I think. Could be dropped to near SL overnight with right bombs.
Thanks! That is really a first class zoo -- I thought I remembered it being higher then some areas we were in during our stay there.
blocking buses with evacuees? I don't get it.
Watching (ugh) Aaron Brown and the rescue people are saying they had to stop rescuing hospital patients because thugs were turning over their rescue boats and they couldn't continue the rescue of the sick people... also had a generator stolen... this guy is furious at no police protection to stop these thugs so they can get these people out!
That's my home state ~LOL~ Take no prisoners!
There is a very narrow opening of Lake Ponchartrain through the Rigolets and into Lake Borgne. It takes a while for the lake to drain after hurricanes or after the spill way has been opened. The river drains well below the lake, probably 60 miles, so unless it is coming through the Bonne Carre Spillway, the river is not feeding the lake.
A couple of the forecat tracks went along 90 West, but not west of it.
You do have a grasp of how incredibly accurate the forecast tracks were, don't you? the difference between the forecast tracks and actual is beyond microscopic.
Don't know. Never saw NO sober.
ps: all that's left of both the Bay St. Louis bridges are the pylons.
I fear for the rescue people...bigtime. Unless they start shooting thugs, this crap will only get worse.
Spent eight years down there before coming up to another take no prisoners state of Oklahoma. The two states known for putting murderers to death -- Texas and Oklahoma.
