BALTIMORE (August 31, 2005) Emergency managers up the east coast and elsewhere are reporting serious gas shortages.
"We may be facing a major fuel supply situation," reported a county-level emergency manager in South Carolina. "We in this county are cutting all non-essential services such as garbage pickup. It is a developing situation."
Gas stations in upstate South Carolina reported they were running out of gas. "The state is telling us the pipeline that services the northeast has been disrupted at the supply point in Louisiana, and that it will take a week and half for it to reach us," he said. "A lot of gas stations are out and closed in this area."
In North Carolina, a gas station on U.S. 74 reported it had only premium gas left and was selling it for $2.99. Station managers say they are unable to get gas from their suppliers. A nearby competitor station reported it had to close altogether because it was out of all fuel.
In Michigan, gas prices were as high as $3.92 for unleaded regular in Garden City, just one of many stations with high prices in the Detroit metro area. Forty percent of Michigans gas comes from the Gulf Coast.
Hurricane Katrina shut down a number of oil platforms, refineries and pipelines.
There are refineries all over the country. Take a look at all of these refineries.
U.S. Refineries Operable Atmospheric Crude Oil Distillation Capacity
Well, if everyone rushes out to top off their tank, then you can expect shortages.
Yes, there are refineries but you also have to look at distribution. It was dependent on two major pipelines that have no power for their pump stations in the Louisiana/Mississippi leg. I am sure it is a priority to restore power and will happen shortly but in the meantime . . .
Yes there are but the pumps to the pipelines along the east coast were destroyed along the Gulf coast.
I think it would be prudent to declare a school holiday for Thurs. and maybe Fri.
Pipeline pumping stations that I'm aware of are powered by big gas turbines. I wonder where they get their fuel...
If you're right, and those pumping stations are under water, well, I suppose that might take a few or even a week to put right. But even so... not panic time, IMO FWIW.
(steely)
Lucky you. I filled up at $2.89 per gallon here in central Missouri. While I was standing in line to pay I found out the price had just gone up 23 cents per gallon while I was filling my tank. If only I had filled up this morning or even 15 minutes earilier.
I've been watching tv and crying half the day -
Dream on. No one can build a new refinery in this country because of environmental constraints.
The tank farm was shut down around 3pm today...
Why?
The key word there being RUMOR. We had one started here in Georgia. It was stated on the news that the pipelines from LA that supply Atlanta were down. What they failed to mention is that we get a lot of our gas from the Georgia ports. So a panic was created, and there is a now a rush on the gas stations, long lines, and there will be a shortage. A completely media created shortage.
No gas coming in, no gas going out.
Not picking up the trash is an annual event in Baltimore, Tenacious 1.
Happens about a month before contracts come up for re-negotiation. It also helps in the tracking of the migration of rats from Sparrows Point down to the Inner Harbor.
Jack.
I filled up earlier today in Fairfax, VA .. paid only one cent more than I paid at the same station a week ago ($2.79 v. $2.78)
