Reports like this today are tending to substantiate what MFH's friend said on the phone.

Mississippi search crews pulling bodies from rubble

Who knows what the final tally will be? Will it be thousands? Possibly. It is clear at this point that it will be many hundreds. Sadly, tragically, I expect it to go higher.

(from email)

Team PA,

Navy leadership is sincerely concerned for our Sailors and their family members in the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina. In light of the communication difficulties created by the hurricane, BUPERS has set up a 24 hour helpline for both Sailors and families to call for information regarding their loved ones.

The number is 1-877-414-5358

This line will be staffed 24 hours by active duty Navy volunteers and will have connectivity with Navy, FEMA and other government agencies. They will try their very best to answer questions regarding the status of Navy family members, but please be aware that communication in the region is still inconsistent.
