It is with heavy heart I write this...
I have finally reconnected with my best friend who is a paramedic who was sent from Georgia 2 days ago to Gulf Port, Mississippi before the hurricane hit.
He just reached me within the last 10 mins via emergency cell phone to tell me he was alive.
Thousands of bodies have been discovered throughout Mississippi in Gulf Port, Waveland,Hancock County,Bay of St.Louis.
They are hanging in trees and they are pulling them out 30 at a time. Entire families found drowned in their homes and washing up on shore.
The stories he could tell me were brief. National Guard is on the scene and arresting anyone seen on the streets.
The numbers are staggering and what I have been told tonight will shake people to their foundation as the numbers will be coming out in the next 24-hours of just how many people have actually perished in these and 3 other beach communities.
More to follow....
The ones who stayed were those who could not get tranpsortation out of the area, the sick and the elderly.
And the ones who thought they could 'handle it'. Insurance will take care of looters for the average person.
Probably the high-end steel vaults would not, but your average funeral home casket can and does break open through deterioration in the ground, running into things, etc. The pine boxes are not really a problem because everything rots pretty quickly and they don't pop up to the surface because there's no air pocket inside.
If you have ever sealed a casket, you'd know it is pretty well-sealed.

I remember the death toll reporting on the tsunami... seemed like it was several days or a week before the high numbers started to come out.
There are a few sources hinting at a large death toll today. This was posted by Rod Dreher on National Review Online last evening:
BODIES, LOOTERS [Rod Dreher]
I finally got through to my family down in south Louisiana today. They live just north of Baton Rouge, on high ground, and had no damage, other than fallen trees. But they have no power, and don't know when they'll get it back, so they're boiling in the late August heat and humidity.
Still, my sister said they would never complain, given what people are suffering not too far away. She had little idea of what's happening, because their TVs don't work. It's probably just as well. I heard from a Louisiana National Guard source that there are bodies everywhere in the far south, but the authorities aren't publicizing this.
I don't know if that means "thousands" dead, but, given Gov. Barbour's remarks last evening and this morning, it would be no surprise.
I'm guessing half the looters are now alligator and fireant food. Stay safe everyone. I'm out for the day.
Don't worry about txradioguy...lost cause for now.
Time will tell the truth of this event, unfortunately.
I hope you and yours are all safe. I've got a good friend in Slidell that I haven't been able to contact yet.
Those pesky Italians .... your mistake is series and could become hugh.
Religious kook alert! Pat Robertson, is that you???
Because he lost contact with his friend, who is on the scene.
Please let us know if you hear anything.
Is there a thread for missing FReepers?
Welcome to FR today.
Being a part time skeptic - you are not related to those people who always happen to live next door to the person to whom some story/event happened to, are you?

Yes, indeed he does.
Hugh used to respect FR. He's come to see it as many of us have, as a haven for kooks (and bigots, I'll tos in).
Oh well.
Then just keep hitting the abuse button onme like you've been doing for the last two hours.
*yawn*.
Yeah, sounds like it will take awhile. Electricity is reportedly out over 80 percent of Mississippi, and I imagine cell service and landlines are pretty much kaput, too. One poster upthread pointed out that many roads are still blocked with downed trees, so some smaller communities likely have not even been contacted at all yet.

That's what I'm hoping for!
