It is with heavy heart I write this...
I have finally reconnected with my best friend who is a paramedic who was sent from Georgia 2 days ago to Gulf Port, Mississippi before the hurricane hit.
He just reached me within the last 10 mins via emergency cell phone to tell me he was alive.
Thousands of bodies have been discovered throughout Mississippi in Gulf Port, Waveland,Hancock County,Bay of St.Louis.
They are hanging in trees and they are pulling them out 30 at a time. Entire families found drowned in their homes and washing up on shore.
The stories he could tell me were brief. National Guard is on the scene and arresting anyone seen on the streets.
The numbers are staggering and what I have been told tonight will shake people to their foundation as the numbers will be coming out in the next 24-hours of just how many people have actually perished in these and 3 other beach communities.
More to follow....

That's OK, you can just stick it where your head is.

I have a new tin-foil hat I can sell you, for only $100,000. Let me know if you're interested. Ah yes, when you can't refute the arguement, smear the poster. Makes you look really smart.

Emergency cell phones don't use cells, they use satellites. They can be used anywhere on earth.

There's a lot of rubble. It is going to take weeks with cadaver dogs to find all the bodies under it all (that didn't wash out to sea).
What do you mean? This thread is about thousands of people hanging dead in trees everywhere being recovered in batches of thirty.
We're not talking about buried under rubble or washed out to sea.

Concerning reporting people missing, if whole families are dead who is going to report them missing? Boy, is that a good point.

It is a truly humbling tragedy that has occurred. Humbling.

I think the Gulf Coast press has tried to set up a "check-in" website either through the Red Cross or the paper's website. You might try and see if you can find that to get some information.
I know Hugh Hewitt has linked to this post and scolded for unsourced "junk" but honestly, he hasn't lived in those areas and those of us that have get perspective from posts like this.

You know, there are other forms of communications besides cell phones and cell towers... Amateur radio, CB radio, etc. Emergency and LE personnel have their own radios independent of the the cell phone system too...

"What I'm authorized to say now is we expect the death toll to be higher than anything we've ever seen before," said Jim Pollard, civil defense spokesman for Mississippi's Harrison County, which includes Biloxi and Gulfport.

Then they're not cell phones. They're satellite phones. As I recall, from the defunct Iridium phone system that cost Motorola (or some big evil corporation) tens of billions before they unloaded it.

Geez, GWB -- My Favorite Headache isn't exactly a newbie poster. He's been around as long as you have, and lots of us give him credibility.
Katie Couric doesn't have a monopoly on reporting news. There have been some huge stories reported right here, first.

Hmmmm. Are you sure the storm got Cousin Alex in Kansas? The context is that the government would hide the fact that these people got killed. This is what the original poster suggested. Sure a whole family could get killed, but how would the government conspiracists be sure that no one would notice that a particular individual was dead. I have no patience for conspiracy theories.

Heavenly Father, we come to You with heavy hearts. Oh Lord, SUCH devastation...
Lord, please help the living, help them be rescued very soon. Comfort the families who've lost their loved ones and their homes. Time is running out for so many, Lord. I pray for all of the rescue workers, for the police, the National Guard...Lord, give them the strength they're going to need to deal with this tragic situation.
We pray, God, for the children, for the ill, for the elderly. Lord, I ask you to soften the hearts of the looters, to make them STOP now...to stop this madness.
Oh Lord, we're hurting...please hear our prayer. In Your Holy Name,
Amen ... and Amen.

There was no sudden turn before landfall...it was right on the forecast track. It made landfall at the same spot as the 60hr forecast... They had 60 hours before landfall. The forecast was very accurate after Friday afternoon.
There was no sudden turn...it followed the track.

God rest their souls...and protect, comfort and keep the souls of their loved ones and those suffering.
This is a sad, heavy report...and doesn't even include New Orleans yet. I fear the death toll indeed will be in the many thousands.
I pray the authorities in New Orleans get a handle on the civil unrest that is growing there amidst the tens of thousands trapped in the city. Many lessons to be learned from this, and not just by the "authorities", but also by all citizens if they are watching closely.
I pray we can all help in whatever way possible from our various circumstances to relieve the suffering and help those people find shelter and then permanent homes.
