Late Tuesday, Gov. Blanco spokeswoman Denise Bottcher described a disturbing scene unfolding in uptown New Orleans, where looters were trying to break into Children's Hospital.

Bottcher said the director of the hospital fears for the safety of the staff and the 100 kids inside the hospital. The director said the hospital is locked, but that the looters were trying to break in and had gathered outside the facility.

No Children's Hospital Looting 4:35 p.m.

Doug Mittelstaedt, vice-president of Human Resources for Children's Hospital in New Orleans, said one of the biggest issues at the hospital on Wednesday was debunking the prevalent rumor that looters had stormed the hospital.

Mittelstaedt said things actually were operating smoothly at the hospital - the generator was running efficiently and efforts to relocate patients were going well - but fighting the rumor was a major issue.

Officials had to lock the doors of the hospital because people had arrived, apparently thinking there was a mob scene and they could get in on looting.

He said the hospital has been flooded with calls offering assistance from other Children's Hospitals in Louisiana and Texas. "The amount of calls we have gotten for support have been overwhelming," Mittelstaedt said. "The phones literally have been ringing off the hook."

With so many calls, Mittelstaedt said officials have been able to match up the 100 patients with hospitals that specialize in the particular treatments for each.

You almost hope if they break in they steal the wrong drugs and ending up seriously hurting themselves. There are paralitics and othe such drugs which can kill you in seconds, also many drugs need to be diluted before injecting them.

Crazed, armed dandies in fur coats?

Yep, in NO where the temps are in the 90's in the day and 80's at night you are going to wear a fur coat. Add to that the waist deep water, this has got to be the fashion statement of the decade. Of course they may be getting the chills because they have not had a fix lately.

My guess is the dealers got out of town on Saturday/Sunday and these people are about to go cold turkey if they don't get some junk real quick.

Maybe they will OD and then drown in the flood waters--clean up the gene pool and do us all a favor.

Says the police and NG can't respond due to flood.

The Governor has gone completely off her rocker. Her answers tell me she doesn't give one whit one way or the other.

I heard New Orleans has succeeded in making a ghetto into a tourist attraction.

I can think of many women who would kick ^ss in this situation, starting with Maggie Thatcher and Condi Rice. They're not dems, though.

Prayers for those who mourn.

"Why would anyone want to loot a hospital?"

Because it's there. Because it's vulnerable. Because they can.

Can't watch all the pain and suffering without donating...

I hope many others do to. I believe that when the actual death and destruction is known, it will be far worse than we currently understand it.

The first thing I noticed when they showed some of those videos of the stores being looted was that the pharmacies had been trashed.

That and the liquor department.

Guard units from 10 states on their way, including Special Forces Boat teams from Florida. More states mobilizing engineering units with heavy equipment. Mississippi seems better supported on the ground right now, compared to LA/NO. They pre-positioned heavy equipment in vunerable areas before Katrina hit.

In the one video they keep showing you can see that all the food is still on the shelves but the liquor department is completly empty, I guess the DUers are wrong in saying they are stealing for survival

Also they are saying people are trying to get into the hospital for first aid and a bed to sleep in. If this is true why do they have guns?

That's the rub. The problems seem to be coming from state and local government level, and so far, I know the Governor of LA and the Mayor of NOLA are Democrat. The mayor wants to get his 60 minutes of fame on TV with Larry King, and the Governor is an absolute moron.

There was this heavy set black woman whooping it up in front of the camera, big gallon jug of cranberry juice in one hand and bottle of vodka in the other. I guess she was going home to get smashed.

I think we know why, Haley Barbour is the Governor.

Yeah I saw that too but I thought it was just two jugs of cranberry juice. I have said in earlier posts that I can understand stealing food but the more I think about it the less I feel for them.

I doubt they ran out of supplies because of the hurricane most people (myself included who is poor) can live off of whats in our cupboards for 3-5 days. Also if they can make it to a store they can reach a relife center or get out of the city.

I remember going to a two year college, staying in an apartment, typically eating cold cereal, TV Dinners, canned soup, and Ramen Noodles.

Right now I am living at home had to quit college, trying to get SSI and am still able to survive without committing crimes. It is tough but it can be done.

Then we heard that the people who are looting had no means of leaving the city. Well if you have the resources to get a mob together and loot a city you can surely hop in your car and drive as far north as possible.

You got that right. Haley was really ticked that more people did not heed his order to evacuate. You would think after Camille people would have learned a hard lesson in the coastal area in MS. The eastern panhandle in FL got hit pretty hard too, but not as bad as MS. My cousins in Pensacola had a lot of water around their houses near Pensacola, and the downtown area was flooded. After boarding up their places, all of them headed north to avoid any problems.
