I'm just wondering why alternating sections were lifted out of place while the others were left there (as opposed to all of them being lifted out of place).

Randomness. Inconsistency in current. Wave heights. And possibly some construction reasons. The Hwy. 90 bridge between Ocean Springs and Biloxi lost almost all the spans on both ends, but about the middle 1/3 was still present, and some of the spans there were askew.

Each span will act independently. If force is applied that exceeds the forces holding the span in place, it will move. The force applied to the spans is not uniform.

I know that's simplistic. But that's the way it works.

My guess is that those sections are anchored.
