Actually, I heard on the radio that Gulfport is the only airport that isn't currently handling flights.
I disagree with any grumbling about the speed of the Federal response. Thanks to the President's leadership, FEMA was authorized to preposition relief assets.
Both the NOLA area airports are offline at this hour - either flooded or possibly undermined and not safe to use until someone can drop in by chopper and examine it.
Also - exactly so! If Bush hadn't declared early and alerted the other Fed agencies, we'd still be looking at the Feds figuring out what stuff needs to go there as opposed to rolling equipment and doing things (which is what is happening.)
He did a great job by realizing early on how serious this would be and getting FEMA mobilized before the cane even hit.
Relief is one thing...rescue is another.
According to fly.faa.gov, New Orleans International and Lakefront are both still closed, as is Stennis International in Bay St. Louis, MS and Gulfport/Biloxi.
The website claims New Orleans International is expected to reopen August 31 at 07:00 AM CDT. I'll believe it when I see it.
No date is set for reopening the other 3 closed airports.
