We've never seen anything like this before in the United States. Yes we have -- just not outside a Civil War battlefield. Side note: identifying bodies will be difficult or impossible. I think a lot of folks will never get positive word that their friends and family are dead, rather than "missing."

Just clicked on CNN in time to hear the reporterette sneer that GW had just flown over parts of Mississippi and NO, and spent (all of), 35 minutes inspecting the damage. So, did she want him to do an 8-hour pylon turn in AF1, or perhaps he should waste precious resources getting on the ground where there are thugs with guns and a willingness to use them.

just not outside a Civil War battlefield That is the ONLY comparison I could even think of. We've seen nothing like this in that long and, certainly, no natural disaster this big. Hang on folks... this is going to stagger the imagination.

"The 23,000 New Orleans evacuees who have been holed up at the Superdome with little air conditioning, food and water, will be bused 12 hours to Houston to be housed for an indefinite period at the Houston Astrodome"
12 hours? It's only about 350 miles from NO to Houston.

St. Bernard
IS gone. The photo of the Industrial Canal bridge shows ater flowing from St. Bernard over the levee into the canal from the St. Bernard side.
![](http://us.news3.yimg.com/us.i2.yimg.com/p/ap/20050830/capt.ladp11108301631.hurricane_katrina_ladp111.jpg?x=380&y=253&sig=hVq6H3XJ8GBQLyLJA4Arbg--)
That levee is not small and the homes on the St. Bernard side are about WAY below the top of the levee.

I just have a feeling that many people who have been whining about the President being "on vacation" are going to be very sorry that he's now back!
I was also very grateful to hear that the CBS radio local radio news had something else to report.....other than $3.00/gallon at the pumps.
To: hershey
I heard the same thing and I didn't get that impression from her at all.

A guy on CNN just said they are trying to get the patients out of the hospital by nightfall because "New Orleans is so dangerous now."

I would like to see an executive order curbing unnecessary travel. That would, of course, include Cindy Sheehan's bus tour.

12 hours? It's only about 350 miles from NO to Houston. Which is 6 hours in your car, on undamaged roads. On overloaded city buses it'll take longer.
