Out of NO? I missed it, but hope you are right. Where are the busses picking up folks. Are they rolling into the Superdome, and from where?

Are you from Louisiana? I have educated friends that have lived there all their lives telling me I was overreacting. "It will turn, it always does" was the same phrase I heard over and over. I think the officials in New Orleans should have placed a higher level of urgency on the situation. They were much more reactive than proactive.

I find it ironic that I am having to defend people I campaigned against but here I go. Blanco I can't fault yet. She has been busy relocating and trying to provide shelter for about a fourth of the state including those about to max out there cards at their hotels and shelter has to be found. plus coorindating a rescue effort after a major evac. Personally I glad she is not all pie in the sky now and in public relations reelection mode. Again we are a small not very wealthy Southern state and what we have done including what we have done under leadership so far is pretty amazing.

http://www.nola.com/newslogs/breakingtp/index.ssf?/mtlogs/nola_Times-Picayune/archives/2005_08.html

In Uptown, one the few areas that remained dry, a bearded man patrolled Oak Street near the boarded-up Maple Leaf Bar, a sawed-off shotgun slung over his shoulder. The owners of a hardware store sat in folding chairs, pistols at the ready.

Uptown resident Keith Williams started his own security patrol, driving around in his Ford pickup with his newly purchased handgun. Earlier in the day, Williams said he had seen the body of a gunshot victim near the corner of Leonidas and Hickory streets.

"What I want to know is why we don’t have paratroopers with machine guns on every street," Williams said.

Like-minded Art Depodesta sat on the edge of a picnic table outside Cooter Brown’s Bar, a chrome shotgun at his side loaded with red shells.

"They broke into the Shell station across the street," he said. "I walked over with my 12-gauge and shot a couple into the air."

The looters scattered, but soon after, another man appeared outside the bar in a pickup truck armed with a pistol and threatened Depodesta.

"I told him, ‘Listen, I was in the Army and I will blow your ass off,’" Depodesta said. "We’ve got enough trouble with the flood."

The man sped away.

"You know what sucks," Depodesta said. "The whole U.S. is looking at this city right now, and this is what they see."

In the Bywater, a supply store sported spray-painted signs reading "You Loot, I Shoot" and "You Bein Watched." A man seated nearby with a rifle in his lap suggested it was no idle threat. At the Bywater studio of Dr. Bob, the artist known for handpainted "Be Nice or Leave" signs, a less fanciful sentiment was painted on the wall: "Looters Will Be Shot. Dr. Bob."

And to what airport would you be flying these C-130s? New Orleans International is closed. New Orleans Lakefront is closed. Belle Chase Naval Air Station sustained 105 MPH winds during the height of the storm. I don't know whether it is open. Baton Rouge is miles away down flooded roads.

It takes time to clear runways after being hit by a hurricane. And you have to make sure they are not waterlogged so planes can actually land instead of crash.

Are you stupid enough...

Whoa, what is it you were saying about personal attacks, that I was resorting to them? I think not. And I'm still not, but I guess it's okay for you. They have had a backup generator that only runs emergency lights, and even it was about to run out of gas sometime earlier today. It would NOT run the PA system for the SuperDome at any time.

You get more and more friendly as the night goes on ;)

"What does he think the President can do? Call down fire from heaven to stop the water from flowing?"

If he did, the ACLU would call it unconstitutional.

The airport was in beautiful shape on Sat, and Sun, and indeed, on Tuesday morning. Now it is under water. Pity. The early bird gets the worm.

just

speechless

Obviously even the looters do not see marshal law as a serious threat to their activities. Must be nice to be such a USELESS public official. (s)what next a blue ribbon panel to report back in 12 months?(/s)

Yes I live in Louisiana including for the time in the New Orleans area. Yes alot people said that and it was cliche is some ways. Perhaps we thought we would always be lucky. The problem and is related to what your friends said was that we had two recent major evac where New Orleans wasnt damaged hardly at all. The officials were recognizing that people might start ignoring them even though the past warnings were valid. The fact that they had to be sure plus the rapid way this storm came upon us whenit was apparentt we were at real risk gives the appearance every acted in a non carlant mannor but I know for a fact that as soon as this storm left Florida on its course the LA govt did start their preliminary plan. Again it was the lack of time not nola or LA govt that gives the appearance of reactive govt

People in Miami learned that lesson in 1992 after hurrican andrew.

An armed neighborhood is an UNlooted neighborhood.

In fact the radio should be ENCOURAGING citizens to be engaged in OPEN carry. This will give looters pause.

So you are admitting that the City of New Orleans put 36,000 people into an arena with NO WAY OF COMMUNICATING with them?

Good to know.
