RALEIGH, N.C. -- North Carolina is no longer the only state along the East Coast that does not have a lottery. Senators passed the measure Tuesday by one vote.
Senate Majority Leader Tony Rand, D-Cumberland, brought up the bill for consideration about 1:15 p.m. Senate leader Marc Basnight told WRAL he called senators back to Raleigh because he thought the votes were there to pass a lottery.

How do solidly red states like NC still elect Democratic legislatures??
Cause the Republicans haven't given us any good choices.
"My grandpappy would roll over in his grave if I ever voted for a republican." --NC Democratic voter
Because a lot of Left Coastists and NE Leftists move here to the cities (Raleigh, Durham, Charlotte, UNC-Chapel Hill) for high tech jobs (Research Triangle Park,et.al. -- hey, that's what I did) and are changing the character of the place.
How is it then that the democrats owned this state 100% until the mid 1990's when republicans finally started winning some elections around this state?
And how was it that it wasn't until after the Yankee invasion that a republican finally won a seat on the council of state for the first time in history?
I think what you are seeing is this plus the few remaining yellow-dog Dems who vote Democrat because that's what their granddad did.
Looks like Sleazley finally got his way after whining all these years. Disgusting!!!!
MKM
Just repeating a stereotype.
Many of the people who move in are conservatives from the midwest (they still count as Yankees) or escaping the cultural cesspool of the northeast. Some are liberals. Some are blacks from the South (and elsewhere) who vote Democrat.
Basnight, the Democrat senate majority leader who orchestrated this little move, is elected by redneck locals. Richard Morgan, the RINO who has helped Democrats hold onto power the last few years, is elected by redneck locals.
Great, more funds thrown into PhD at Three. Meanwhile 50,000 people sit on the I-485 parking lot burning fuel. Not to worry -- there are plans to add another lane in 2015.
I only wish Dare County was still "red neck locals."
Bout time, it was only 10 years ago when the Dems said "Elect us and put us back in power and we'll pass a lotto bill."
Makes me furious!
Now the Dems are rubbing their greasy little hands together in glee at all the extra money they'll have to play with.
"For the children", my ass.
Another state allows the lower class to throw their money away.
Exactly...now they won't have to worry about funding Edukashun out of the general budget WOO HOO!!! More $$ to pay off their cronies.
Any idea when we'll be seeing our first shipment of strong beer in the stores? Looks like we could use it ASAP.
LOL, you're right.
I haven't been to the grocery store for beer lately.
I will ask when I go this weekend.
Despite previously polling senators and not finding enough support for a lottery, the N.C. Senate met without two lottery opponents present and narrowly approved the measure Tuesday. What do you think of the ethics of this move?
