This disaster will be a real eye-opener for the Homeland Security folks.

I think the plans for most major cities are going to have to include large-scale movement of people by rail -- freight trains, mainly. Load any rail car capable of carrying people, and just drag them out of town. Of all the modes of transportation available, trains can carry by far the most people in the fewest number of trips.

Agree with you - they could have used public buses, Greyhound buses, school buses etc., in addition to pre-positioned train cars.

The operative word - of course- is PLAN!!!!!!!!

I sure hope that are talking about post or voluntary evacuation only. If not then it kind of reminds of another time when people were moved out on trains.

I know for a fact that this used to be done in the sixties. My mother was a public health nurse who commanded and organized refugee centers inland during hurricanes. It worked quite well.
