Government bears a responsibility to make sure that everyone in a city like New Orleans can get out if there is a disaster.

I disagree. This is not a fact, it is your opinion, which you have every right to hold. On this our opinions of governmental responsibility differ, and with that we will have to agree to disagree.
Stay safe.

...darn it...it's just wrong that they're pillaging like this. They're degrading themselves...and our Country.

They do not represent America...never did IMO.

It's called storm duty and thank goodness we are way past the point of having to do that anymore.

When Floyd hit here, my husband was still an adjuster and had to handle the entire area east of I-95; there was nowhere for him to stay so he came back and forth every night.

In all the time I've known him, I've never seen him depressed until then, but the sheer destruction just took him down.

Australia has it's fine share of criminals that would take advantage in the exact same way.

You KNOW this, HOW? You ever lived there? I HAVE for several years.

Your contention is that a large Australian city would not see looting after a similar type of emergency breakdown?

They are probably so poor, probably uneducated, are so desperate that at a time like this, they can only think of material posessions. It's very sad.

Don't get too damn sentimental. These are the same clowns who spend 24/365 in NO in every other city looking for ways to take things that aren't theirs. Today, with police busy elsewhere and most citizens gone, they are simply free to do on a large scale what they do on smaller scale every other day of the year.

In central New Jersey I live very close to a historic canal, the "Delaware & Raritan Canal" which is 66 miles long and was constructed between 1830-34. The canal is built along the banks of the Delaware, Millstone and Raritan rivers. One side of the canal is dug into the hillsides and the other side is a levee wall.

When the canal was in operation, the canal company employed full time "ratters" whose sole job was to trap muskrats in the canal. Muskrats would dig burrows into the canal walls which wasn't a big deal on the hill side of the canal but could lead to leaks or structural failure on the levee side.

Wealthy people probably don't seem greedy because they already have money to spare.

I don't think that is it, at least not entirely. I do know some greedy wealthy people, no matter how much they have they always want more. All their wealth might as well be ashes in their mouths.

I also know plenty of poor people who aren't greedy and have little concern for their situation. They chose it, and they are happy with it.

The real truth is that with morality comes a lot of peace and the ability to make farsighted decisions. Often, that leads to more prosperity.

Did something happen to Pat O'Brian's? Best friggin hurricanes on the planet.

My nine year old was concerned about Cafe du Monde.

I pledge my family will give tourist dollars to NO when they are back on their feet. Beignets and Hurricanes. A truly great city.

I only just got home, so I've only seen Shep for about a little while, but he is very good and effective, his summary at the top of the hour was amazing. This may be his finest hour.

Has anyone even seen the mayor or heard from him today?

I guess he was out drinking last night and bragging how the city fared. Today I seen where he was moving out of city hall because of the rising water and was to relocate his commmand post at the Super Dome!

Has anyone offered their homes to the survivors yet?

IF NOT, let me be the first! I live in Midland, Texas, on high, dry land and have room for a family of 4.

What on earth is wrong with hoping the sea lion doesn't die?

I hope he's saved as well.

If my memory serves me right you see the superdome off to the left of the freeway as you come into the city. I think it's on the other side of downtown from the French Quarter.

They have NOT disgraced Americans. They have disgraced their Mothers and Fathers who didn't teach them any better. But I am not justifying looting. I am just saying in a relatively free benevolent society, it will happen at times like this.

And frankly, I don't give a damn about it, I just don't. Let someone deal with them later. The fools may not live thru this.
